Actinic Keratosis or AK’s are crusted, flaking, non-healing lesions that develop after prolonged UV sun exposure that mutates the cells that normally develop skin. If left untreated, they pose a risk in developing into a skin cancer most commonly known as squamous cell in Situ or SCC. Though these lesions can show up anywhere, most commonly we see these in the areas of the scalp, face, neck, ears and arms. Fortunately, there are treatments that can be used to eradicate o...r kill the cells that have been changed by the sun and allow the healthy skin cells underneath to take their place. Liquid nitrogen can be applied, which causes a frost bite like reaction, killing those affected cells on top in a spot treatment fashion. Fluorouracil, is a topical agent that can be applied. This is a topical chemotherapy that acts locally to rid the skin of affected cells. This will only affect cells that have been changed and not normal cells. Photodynamic therapy or PDT, is the use of a medicated solution that is sensitized with the addition of a blue light. When sensitized, the medication becomes active and seeks out the cells that have been affected by sun exposure and have the potential to become cancerous. This option has excellent benefits to prevention of skin cancer. It treats all lesions in the field treated, both the cells that we can see as well as areas that are not yet symptomatic.
