League of Women Voters of Monterey County 14.02.2021

The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a free talk titled:"The Future of Our Water Supply and the CalAm Buyout" at a live-streamed General Meeting at noon on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. Dave Stoldt, General Manager, Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD), will present the latest information and answer audience questions on current water issues. The District is taking steps to provide a water supply that will serve Peninsula needs for the ne...xt thirty to forty years. Currently the priority is to maximize use of recycled water, with a possible look at desalination in the longer term. The District is also evaluating steps required in making an offer to CalAm to acquire its water system. These actions are required by Measure J, which passed by 55.81% to 44.19% in November 2018. The Measure instructed the MPWMD to undertake a feasibility study on the public takeover of California American Water’s Monterey Water System. Mr. Stoldt joined the District as General Manager in 2011. He has 30 years of experience in the public infrastructure sector, including investment banking and consulting to public agencies. He has also served as chief executive and chief financial officer for early-stage start-up companies, where his roles have included cross-functional experience in strategic planning, finance, marketing, logistics, and management. A great day for Democracy!

This is a dark day in our history. Today should have been a procedural exercise to finalize the 2020 election. Instead, our nation's Capitol is under siege by d...omestic terrorists bent on violently invalidating the will of the people. President Trump should concede that the election is over and call for his supporters to stand down, respect the certification process and support a peaceful inauguration on January 20th.

The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a talk titled: "An Update on Assembly District 30 and the Challenges We Face" at a live-streamed General Meeting at noon on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. Please join District 30 Assemblymember Robert Rivas for a discussion on recent legislation in the California State Assembly and the COVID related challenges we face moving forward. Mr. Rivas was elected to a second term in November 2020 earning 73% of the vote. On V...oter's Edge he stated that his top three priorities are housing, the environment and health care. Assemblymember Robert Rivas grew up in Assembly District 30, in San Benito County. As a boy, he watched his grandfather fight for farmworkers’ rights alongside Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez. Inspired by his grandfather, Rivas chose to pursue a career in public service. Now, in his second term as the Assemblymember representing District 30, he serves as Chair of the Agriculture Committee and Vice-Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus. In his first term, Assemblymember Rivas successfully passed a number of legislative bills including AB-1783, The Farmworker Housing Act, and the California Farmworker COVID-19 Relief Package. Assemblymember Rivas still lives in Hollister with his wife, Christen, and their four-year-old daughter. The role of Congress this week is to confirm that the votes sent are the ones the electors certified. Congress has no legal ability to change those results. Read our statement on the joint session to certify the presidential election.

We joined the League of Women Voters of the U.S., the League of Women Voters of Florida, and the League of Women Voters of Texas filing an amicus in the SCOTUS ...case challenging the Donald J. Trump Census Order. California immigrant populations are essential to our local economy, and they deserve to be included in the census count, said Stephanie Doute, CAE, ED of the LWVC. A count that excludes undocumented individuals would severely misrepresent the full diverse picture of California’s workforce, student population, and community life.
