The Broadway Residence is our 1998 remodel of home designed by the late Bay Area architect William Wurster in 1961. The striking modern façade opens to a series of unfolding exterior experiences: through the entry courtyard, past the interior garden, and finally to an expansive view of the San Francisco Bay. The house contains contrasts of intimate and open spaces, of sharp and curving geometries, of built and natural elements but is connected through a continuous relationship to the natural world: sun, sky, or sea. . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes

The Ryan Residence project was a renovation + partial redesign of an existing spec house in the North Bay. We transformed the entry by adding a steel and glass greenhouse to the façade - approached via a curving, elevated walkway through lush vegetation. The path both delineates and provides access to new multi-level decks and gardens around the home. Steel and glass elements permeate the interior as well, providing a sense of continuity throughout the project. The cleanly remodeled interior also serves as a minimal backdrop and canvas for the constant play of light and shadow from the surrounding gardens. . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes

The Hourglass Winery project has always been one of our favorite designs. Jeff and Carolyn Smith came to us with the hope of building a world-class winery. Budgetary considerations moved us away from a building and to a more simple cave solution. All the wine and hospitality was accommodated inside the cave, and only the tanks and crush pad were left outside, covered by a large translucent polycarbonate roof. Sadly, as many of you already know, that roof burned in the on-goin...g Glass Fire, along with the century-old farmhouse in the middle of the vineyard that welcomed many guests. We are heartbroken for Jeff and Carolyn; it is painful to see so much destroyed. It appears from photos that the cave and its contents survived, as well as the steel and concrete structure. We are hopeful that the process of rebuilding will be relatively straightforward. it seems the decision to move much of the program into the cave at least was a fortuitous one. This is our photo tribute to a great project with great clients; in the hope that they, and all of the beleaguered California wine country, can rebuild from the ashes better that ever! The Bush St. Loft, a second-story residential build-out for a creative couple, turned into a unique opportunity to play with space. Formerly a warehouse, the building provided a great starting point, with board formed concrete walls and a saw-tooth roof over a large open floor plan. While adding a roof terrace, we went ahead and dropped two shipping containers into the home. These became a guest room and office, as well as a sculptural element, aligned with the couple’s exten...sive art collection. With this being the major design move - keeping the rest of the home a clean, rustic backdrop for art - we leaned into some simultaneously raw & playful details, in keeping with the industrial aesthetic. It was a great collaboration with local fabricators, artisans, and creative clients. . . @theurbanlabdesign @drewkellyphoto + many other talented collaborators not listed! . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes See more

The Salt Spring Residence is nestled into the forested hillside of a gulf island in British Columbia. The design is a response to the rustic and secluded site: Dividing the home into three buildings not only breaks down the massing to blend with the landscape but also creates a variety of experiences within it. Pathways, gardens, intentionally-placed windows, and a deck jutting through the trees offer many ways of engaging with nature, both indoors and out. . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes

In the midst of these increasingly uncertain times, we’d like to share a small home that is close to our hearts. . Curly’s Cove is a project that most of us in the office have contributed to at some point. A labor of love, Olle was able to give new life to this near-ruin fisherman’s cabin on the edge of Bodega Bay, as well as a lighter touch on the landscape: We lifted the house above the flood line, and cantilevered it off of its foundation to create a larger zone of salt ma...rsh restoration. The decking is permeable steel grating, which allows both sun and rain to replenish the delicate ecosystem below. Nearly every material in the house is salvaged, and with the power generated by PV panels it achieves net-positive performance. But perhaps most importantly, Curly’s Cove reinforces a connection to the place, allowing people to dwell alongside the rise and fall of the tides in this shifting liminal landscape. And of course, its namesake Curly the dog loves it too. . . A small reminder of the importance to care for this earth. Stay safe everyone! . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes

On the Big Island, time moves a little slower... The Hawaii Residence embraces the culture of indoor/outdoor living supported and shaped by Hawaii’s mild climate. This home, carved into volcanic substrate, amplifies the place. It not only frames views of the landscape, but also provides a palette for light: a variety of surfaces, materials, and volumes that change over the course of the day, allowing you to bear witness to, and move with, the ever-shifting elements. . . @mat...thewmillmanphoto @ryan_construction_co . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes See more

For years, Olle and Mary (and of course their two dogs) made their home on an Icelandic ship - formerly a car ferry called Tufjord, which they renamed Maritol. Olle had the steel vessel repaired in order to traverse the waters between Iceland and California, where the Maritol found a home for nearly twenty years, moored to a pier in the San Francisco Bay. . From Olle: The Maritol was a great adventure, and absolutely the best party venue I’ve every owned! It was also the la...rgest home I’ve ever had (almost 7,000 sq ft). I particularly loved living in harmony with the water - seeing the constant wildlife, feeling the tides and surf, and the different smells and sounds. But it is a giant hunk of steel sitting in salt water, so the maintenance, berthing, and insurance costs eventually got to be a bit much. It is an adventure for a young person, and my selling her probably was an admission that I was no longer part of that group. But she was a great part of my life. . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes @ San Francisco, California See more

We love hearing from clients about the particular ways they enjoy their homes, especially now that everyone is spending more time in them. The Flying Dollar Residence, a home + guest house + independent airport nestled in the Pocono Mountains, opens to a stunning landscape that serves up blazing sunsets and east coast fog. Here are some project photos at (phase one) completion by @brianwetzelphoto as well as a couple that capture the varied and fleeting nuances of the home an...d site, from our client. . . @annsconstruction @smartlam_north_america @thermoryusa @pellawindows . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes See more

The Telegraph Hill Residence, completed in 2016, has stunning views of the San Francisco bay from its perch at the edge of a cliff, but the gracious praise from our client is always about the home-like comfort of this modern design. By crafting a variety of spatial experiences, we embraced the expansive nature of the site while cultivating a sense of intimacy and privacy within. From our client, on living through these unprecedented times: Staying home so much is hard for al...l of us. But being in my home is a privilege that I appreciate during this weird and historic time of upheaval and uncertainty. . . @kuohphotographyinteriors @cesarrubiophotography @niche_interiors @andreacochranlandscape @vanacker.construction . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes @ San Francisco, California See more

How we inhabit indoor and outdoor space has changed since the onset of the pandemic. While our homes have taken on new roles as shelter and workplace, private outdoor space has become a treasured oasis. . This recent @sfgate article features our design for a home that brings the outside in. The former furniture warehouse, built in 1915, just one block from Duboce Park, presents a one-of-a-kind opportunity to create a magnificent home with soaring height that celebrates the r...aw structure of the warehouse while interweaving it with a private garden in the heart of the city. Our design, which has already received planning approval, is currently on the market along with this property. . . https://www.sfgate.com//Duboce-Park-property-for-sale-belc . . #lundbergdesign #lundbergdesignhomes @ San Francisco, California

Home is taking on a new meaning for many these days. As we continue to #shelterinplace we are reflecting on the role of the home, and how grateful we are to have the privilege of crafting homes for many. We’ll be pulling from the archives to share some of our favorites over the coming weeks. Here are a few from the Sonoma Residence, one of our homes that seems to transport no matter how long you stay. . . @joefletcherphoto @fairweather_associates #strandbergengineering ... . . #lundberdesign #lundbergdesignhomes See more
