Rio Nido Roadhouse is a restaurant located in the town of Rio Nido, located between highway 101 and Guerneville. In additon to their regular menu they offer daily specials. Tuesday's Fish 'N Chips, Wednesday's Pasta Night, Thursday's Fried Chicken & Waffle, Friday's Steaks & Stuff, and everyday is Chef's Choice! They also have bands playing and a pool for playing in the summer!

When driving up to the Russian River area you can go through the beautiful city of Sebastopol. There is a lot to see and do so you may as well stop and enjoy it. Luther Burbank’s Gold Ridge Experiment Farm, located at 7777 Bodega Avenue in Sebastopol is where the famed horticulturist Luther Burbank developed 800-plus varieties of fruit and nut trees, flowers, and vegetables. As a City Park, the Farm is open from dawn until dusk every day of the year. Please note that currently there are no restrooms available. Take a Self-Guided Tour or a Docent Led tour. Call 707-827-3203 to arrange a docent tour. Please note that access to the park is via the parking area for the Burbank Heights and Orchards Senior Housing. Have you been to this attraction before? Lucky Bend Lookout is a fun place to cook. We provide everything you will need in the kitchen to make any meal or dessert you want. Not only do we provide all the gadgets and dishes, but we also invested in an amazing induction cook top. Use the power boil setting to boil a kettle or pot of water in a fraction of the time it would take with a gas stove. We also have a bar top right in front of the stove so you can drink wine and socialize with the cook while they are hard at work. And don't forget to play some Jimmy Buffet on the sound bar so you can get into full vacation mode.

Kids always whine about hiking but in the end have a really good time once they get their minds on something fun. When I was a kid, my parents would overcome the resistance by coaxing me from berry bush to berry bush down the trail. By the time I finally got full of berries we had usually managed to get in a full hike. Our latest blog post is Part 1 of our series about our Top 3 Easy, Moderate, and Strenuous hikes in West Sonoma County. A few of our favorite trails in ...Armstrong Woods and Austin Creek were burned in the recent fires and remain closed. When they reopen we'll post an update to these posts. We hope these other equally amazing trails inspire you to get out and enjoy the fresh air and natural beauty of Sonoma County. Sonoma County has a LOT of farms, if you know where to look. Our most recent farm visit was to Casari Ranch for apple picking. It is located in the town of Bodega in a beautiful forested valley along the banks of the Salmon Creek. It is located in Bodega which is closer to the coast than most of the other Sonoma County apple farms, and therefore has cooler weather. The orchard at Casari Ranch is an antique orchard from the days when the farmers would prune the trees up to... into a majestic spreading overhead canopy. As with most of the u-pick orchards in Sonoma, the farm is still family run and the farmers gave each of the kids a colorful basket to fill and showed us how to use the fruit pickers on the end of a very long pole. We needed them to reach the best, juiciest apples at the tops of the trees. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed this challenge but it took some dad height and some back-seat apple picking direction from kiddos to get the biggest ones at the top. One major advantage to picking fruit from tall trees is that it takes longer! Usually when we go fruit picking in Brentwood, the fruit is so easy to reach that we spend only about 15 minutes picking. Then we scratch our heads and wonder what to do to keep busy after driving 2 hours for only 15 minutes of picking. Another unique feature of Casari Ranch is that they will let you use their apple press if you want to make juice from the apples you just picked from their trees. It might just be the only place in Sonoma County where you can press apples in 2020 because the apple press at the Luther Burbank Experimental Farm is not available to the public this year. We most definitely recommend this farm for U-pick because it is small, uncrowded, and the farmers were incredibly friendly. Casari Ranch doesn’t only have apples, either. This is a wonderful place to visit while on your way to the Marin and Sonoma Coasts. The Boat Oyster Bar is the outdoor cafe at Hog Island Oyster Farm. They serve a light, seasonal menu of raw and BBQ’d oysters, salads and fresh seafood specials. It ls located on the Shoreline Highway, on the beautiful Tomales Bay. All seating at The Boat Oyster Bar is outdoors beside the bay where their oysters are grown. All seating is by reservations only, so be sure to call at least one day ahead to make your reservation. 415.663.9218 You can stop at The Boat for lunch while on your way to Lucky Bend Lookout, along the long and scenic coastal route on Highway 1.

And of course there is a special treat at the end! DM me if you want the link to the trail map. . It’s the Islands In the Sky loop and at Sonoma Coast State Park. It’s challenging but not too much for our gang which ranged in age from 4 to 60, and it only takes a couple of hours because it’s only 4 miles. (no dogs..., no restrooms or H2O) . The trail head is located in Duncans Mills on Freezeout Rd. We went counterclockwise to get the steepest part done with early on. . This lovely walk starts out next to a cattle ranch with the first quarter mile more or less flat. When the flat part ends, take a right on the Sky Vista Loop trail. While on the sky vista trail we enjoyed the redwoods forest with its floor blanketed in ferns, mushrooms, nettles, and many other native redwood forest plants. We then took a right on the Full Monty trail and followed it for about a half mile until we got to the Fern Tree View Point. There are at least 3 separate spur trails that go about 1/4 mile to different viewpoints along this loop and I would have loved to do all of them but the kids weren’t into it so we skipped this time. If the weather is clear you will see all the way to the Pacific Ocean from the Fern Tree View Point. After coming to the trail that leads to the fern tree viewpoint we made a left and went inland on the Sky Vista Loop Trail and continued down until we were back at the start. . The special treat at the end is ice cream, of course! We stopped at Scoop of Sonoma in Monte Rio (they also have a location in Forestville) and enjoyed their special frozen custard style of ice cream. . Looking for dinner? My favorite restaurant in that area is Russian House #1. It’s located in Jenner, where the Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean. The views are absolutely stunning from the restaurant. The restaurant is very unique in that they have a different menu every day, and they serve Russian food with a modern and creative twist. Then when it is time to pay, you choose how much you want to pay.

I love to come out on this deck in the morning while sipping my coffee. The water is beautiful, the air smells sweet, and I get to look for wildlife!

Dubrava Beach is a small, lesser known beach in Guerneville, located at highway 116 @ Old Monte Rio Road with limited parking on the south side of of highway 116. It's just a 10 minute walk from Lucky Bend Lookout, or a one minute drive. We recommend visiting this beach if you are staying at Lucky Bend Lookout during the time of year that we don't have our dock on the water, which is usually from October to May. Dubrava Beach also happens to be located on the Lucky Bend so named by anglers who cast from shore to the deep water along the opposite shore. The best time to fish for Steelhead from Dubrava beach is in the winter, but only when the river is flowing at the right speed. You can check the Fish & Game Department's Low-Flow Hotline at 707-944-5533 before going fishing on the Russian River.

Andy's Produce Market is an open air market with vast selection of fruits and vegetables, packaged bulk foods, grocery items, and all-natural health and beauty products. Andy’s is also a great place to find fine wines and beer, specialty foods, and gourmet cheeses. Andy's is conveniently located on the west side of Sebastopol right on highway 116, on the way to Lucky Bend Lookout if you choose the 116 route (not the River Road route). It's the perfect place to get out and stretch your legs while picking up some last minute groceries.
