Schools have such a real opportunity to reimagine, and restructure the school day, learning systems, support systems and subjects taught moving into this new school year, which I think is really exciting. Instead of trying to fit the old school model to current times, dismantle it and focus forward on what will help students understand what's happening in the world now, how to deal with it in healthy, sustainable ways, what it means for the future they will be moving around... in. So many opportunities to take current and recent past events and link them to every single subject area! Hoping physical ed and health teachers use this time to help students focus on their mental health, connect more strongly to their identities and values, cultivate coping skills, learn how recent events influence stress and how to deal with it, notice energy and appetite fluctuations and increase self awareness of what their bodies, minds and hearts really need at this time and how they can learn to support themselves. Its a great time for leaders to emerge with fresh ideas in education geared toward what their teachers, support staff and communities actually need to thrive and I'm optimistic and here for that. Good stuff here that may create some understanding and awareness in yourself and in your children. :)

Part of the nutrition webinar for parents today involves having them reflect on their previous experiences with food and eating since many of us carry the beliefs and habits we were taught or experiences growing up. While there are absolutely practical skills to encourage and cultivate in children, much of the challenging part for parents when it comes to feeding and eating is not carrying forward the beliefs ( like you must clean your plate, you must eat veggies at every mea...l to be healthy, foods that have sugar and fat are bad, controlling portion sizes) that taught them NOT to trust themselves around food or even know what mattered most. I always look forward to these convos with parents as they relieve the pressure of doing it all themselves and controlling every aspect of their kids eating and feeding experience. It’s about creating and cultivating a way of looking at food and eating that is connected, positive, empowered in the sense that we know how to nourish ourselves in all the ways despite what we see and hear that tells us otherwise. Building trust in parents, and in kids is what it’s all about. Onward and upward and together always. See more

Prepping for a nutrition webinar I’m doing this upcoming week on the most important things parents can do to raise happy, healthy eaters and thought this would be useful to share. The goal when it comes to kids and food is basically not to get in their way and F it up. For real. Raising healthy eaters is often interpreted as raising kids who eat only veggies, don’t like sugar, aren’t picky, or appear to be healthy because of the size of their bodies or weight. Not it.... Healthy eaters are kids who are given space, time and opportunities to develop autonomy and self awareness of their own bodies and cues as they grow and develop. Kids who are free to eat not to please the adults at the table but for their own pleasure and enjoyment. Healthy eaters are kids who feel safe emotionally and physically while eating and with the adults in their lives feeding them. This is where positive and personal eating habits and body image grow from. This is where empowerment and the ability to distinguish helpful info from harmful can be cultivated and taught. At the next meal, the next snack, the next time you’re eating together, try letting your kid take the lead in what they eat and how much. Let them decide when to stop even if their plates not clean. Practice trusting them more than you trust yourself. You can do it. So can they. If you're someone who feeds kids and wants in on the webinar, drop me a note or a message. It's free and loaded with goodness. :) See more
