Hello folks. Firstly, Merry Christmas to all of you and best wishes for a great New Year. Jody is off to Carmel for lessons. We have two horses in for some Natural Help. A very athletic Frisian cross and a POA whose owner says is really a small horse. The Frisian has been here a month or so and we are pulling out all the stops searching for the way into his noggin that we are here for him, not an adversary. We like him much. He is quiet, soft, intelligent a real sweethea...Continue reading

Well folks let’s see if I can catch you up on the adventures of Dave & Jody. Since Bucky left we had a great 5 days with Teri Claus here at the ranch. 3 days of horsemanship and 1 day on each end of travel. Susan Olsovsky joined us for two days. We spent some time helping their horses be a bit more accepting of the cattle. Both Susan and Teri are making huge strides with their horses and horsemanship. Jody & I took off for Montana and the Rocking Z guest ranch for our an...Continue reading

Well folks, yesterday, Tuesday, was the final chapter in The Trampas at LS Ranch saga. His new partner, Tanna Lund, came up for another lesson and brought her trailer with her. It is clear that Tanna will be giving Trampas a fine home . Still in the Sierra Nevada foothills; but further north and a little higher elevation. Tanna's place is clear from the fires at this time. It was very interesting how Trampas settled right in with Tanna. Tanna has had some prior issues wi...th her previous horse; but Trampas seemed to say to her "That was the past and we'll be just fine". And it was just fine. Tanna understands Trampas' little idiosyncrasies and is perfectly happy to work through them should they ever appear again. The way the two of them are working together, I'd be surprised if the old Trampas ever shows up again. For safety, Tanna & I rode on the ranch over hills and over logs and obstacles. Her primary focus is trail riding; so we did some of that. We played with the good ole "Heading Back to the Ranch". Tanna handled Trampas' urge to speed up very nicely, and best of all, we cleared her phobia of riding downhill. Trampas listened and responded to her slightest requests giving Tanna renewed confidence on steep slopes. Her sisters, who accompanied her, were absolutely amazed seeing Tanna comfortably riding downhill. Yeah Trampas ! ! ! Here are some parting shots.

Well folks, I finished up the Ride the Rockies course Friday. The format was generally school in the mornings; then ride out in the hills each afternoon. It was a fully loaded week starting with a revue of the necessary knots for a successful trip into the mountains. Then hobble training with a soft cotton rope three braided with a loop placed around one front leg then secured to the other to give us the opportunity to contain our horses when a place to tie them may not...Continue reading

Well Folks, Jody & I have been here at the Parelli Center for 10 days now with much to share. We arrived last Friday and worked on getting acclimated and ready for my class which started on Monday. Jody has been riding Winsome with Linda Parelli every day except one, when Linda took the day off. Winsome is a new horse. I’ll get some pictures for you from Jody. Even with the initial bonding issues with Willow, he settles right in up at Linda’s with Jody. His progress is ...just astounding. My Ride the Rockies class started Monday with 6 students. After some foundation horsemanship time, we headed off on a short ride into the woods surrounding the Parelli Center. Those of you who have ridden with me in the mountains know that I cannot stay on the trails provided; so I set up various scenarios depicting things that could go wrong on a mountain ride like trail washouts, trees having fallen across the trail. Each day we worked on our horsemanship including preparation for hobbling and for staking your horse out to graze. The class is handling these better each day. We ended the week with a ride down one of the steepest hills on the ranch (not Scooch Mountain). Tomorrow we take our first look at packing equipment for overnight journeys. My plan is for each student to pack his own horse and then to be able to lead a pack horse over various terrain. Jody & I are having great fun and looking forward to the oncoming weeks. We’re here through the Summit, now called the Forum.
