Lost Art Salon 16.11.2020

New Arrival - a rare 1967 lithograph by Andre Beaudin (1895-1979). Beaudin was a notable French painter who’s contribution to Modern Art is widely recognized. By the 1930s, cubism had dominated much of the painting world, and had shifted from radical to formulaic. Beaudin was infamous for pushing back against the limitations of cubism, by instead creating his own language of painting using lyrical and even figurative abstract techniques. He was regarded as one of the leading ...painters at the École de Paris. He exhibited widely throughout his lifetime and was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix National des Arts in 1962 in recognition of his contribution to Modern Art. Beaudin’s prolific work is held by a myriad of prestigious institutions such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, as well as museums in Grenoble, Marseille, Baltimore, Caracas, Dortmund, Luxembourg, Santiago, São Paulo, Stockholm and Vienna. . Coming to our website next week. But you can DM us now for details. #lostartsalon #legendsofmodernart #sfgallery #andrebeaudin See more

Just added to our website this wonderfully expressive figure by mid century Marin/SF artist, Richard Van Wingerden (1893-1969). A WPA artist, Van Wingerden studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York and with Benjamin Bufano and Spencer Macky at the Mary Hopkins Institute of San Francisco. Van was a political activist as a member of I.W.W. and the Debs party. In the 1960s, Van was part of the Sausalito Teahouse Group with Ross and Eileen Curtis in Marin. The group used an early 1900s Japanese Teahouse as a studio and exhibition space. #lostartsalon #midcenturymodern #sfgallery #watercolorfigure

There were a lot of highlights to this week, and the acquisition of this historic collection by NY/CA artist Dan Abramson was most definitely one of them. A collection like this is generally the culmination of several months (even several years) of getting to know the caretaker of the artist’s estate (usually a family member). Many emails, calls, conversations and visits occur before we are all certain that we share the same goals and values. On that exciting day when the collection finally lands at The Salon (like the day of this photo) our part of the legacy building can begin. #lostartsalon #midcenturymodern #danabramson #sfgallery #historicartcollection .

We’re matting this mid 1960s watercolor by Frederick Pomeroy (1924-2011) as it heads out to meet its new owner. Pomeroy was a Carmel Valley painter and teacher. He studied at California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA) in Oakland during the 1940s and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France in 1951, where he was awarded a prize for painting from the French Cultural Department. Pomeroy exhibited and traveled widely throughout the U.S. and spent the greater part of his life plein air painting in Carmel Valley, especially Soberanes Point, Point Lobos, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and Pacific Grove, with his wife, Mary Barnas Pomeroy. You can see available works by both Frederick and Mary on our website. #lostartsalon #sfgallery #frederickpomeroy #gallerywall #midcenturymodern
