Happy New Year Local District family! Today marks the start of an amazing first day of the second semester. I pray and hope that many of you took the time over ...winter break to rest, recharge, and reflect. Now more than ever, we have an obligation to our students and families whom we serve to be the best version of ourselves and that means being mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. As we continue to work on the how: how do we begin, how do we get there, how do we finish; it is important to remember the why: why we started this work in the first place, why our students and families need us, and why we continue to do this work day in and day out. I have the utmost respect and admiration for each and every one of you who serve our children. I know this work is not easy but it is necessary and I want you to know that you have my full support in whatever capacity myself and my staff can be of assistance. We are here to serve! Have a wonderful first day of school and let’s get excited about the great things that this semester and 2021 will bring to Local District West! Dr. Adaina Brown Local District West Superintendent
On January 23rd we celebrate Ed Roberts Day. We recognize the life, accomplishments and contributions of Ed Roberts and other Californians with disabilities. Roberts let nothing stop him from seeing what he wanted to see, places he wanted to visit, and adventures that he wanted to make and talk about. He was a leader in the civil rights movement and championed the rights of people with disabilities. He was the founder of the first Center for Independent Living and the World Institute on Disability.
For the past 22 years, Tom Bradley Global Awareness Magnet Elementary School traditionally recognize Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Friday before the national holiday in an all-school Peace March. This year due to the pandemic, they paid tribute virtually during a Zoom event. Dr. George J. McKenna III, Mark Ridley-Thomas, LAUSD Local District West, students, staff, and special guests participated in a Virtual Peace March that recreates their path through the Leimert Park neighborhood to two African-American landmarks: the Leimert Park home of the former mayor for whom the school was renamed in 1999, and the office of the Los Angeles Sentinel, a newspaper long considered a staple of Black life in Los Angeles. #HappyBirthdayMLK
