Los Angeles Giving Circle 15.11.2020

Is there someone in your life you would like to honor - not with bangles, beads, and another bottle of wine - but a donation in their honor to an organization that helps women and girls achieve economic self-sufficiency and financial security? This someone could even be you! The Los Angeles Giving Circle provides grants to organizations that are helping underserved women and girls. We are celebrating our 10 year anniversary. Our goal is to achieve ONE Million dollars in giv...ing by March 10, 2020. Here is a sampling of what we do: Christine, mother of four, broke through the chains of financial insecurity that trap women like her in domestically abusive relationships, with the help of an LAGC funded organization called FreeFrom. Now Christine runs a thriving essential oil business. Then there is Ursula; with the training program offered by WINTER (Women in Nontraditional Employment Roles), she went from a minimum wage service job to being employed as a journeyman electrician earning $27 an hour, more than doubling her income. Alexandra, age 15, attends the after-school program at Las Fotos. With over 3 years of photography skill building, she now works with a team of students and mentors as an on-site paid photographer. And then there is Monica, once homeless, who now works as a web designer and programmer because of CodeTalk, an organization that teaches web technology to low income and underemployed women. Multiply these four women by the 20 organizations LAGC has supported over the last 10 years, and thousands of lives have changed for good. You can help us achieve this goal by donating to www.libertyhill.org/LAGC Please ignore the minimum donation information, that is for membership; any and all donations are appreciated.

On August 23rd, Nancy Hammerman, Carole Hawkes, Janet Lee, Helen MacKinnon, Marilyn Payne and Deborah Rothman paid a return visit to Code Talk to see how the year is shaping up for them. As with prior visits, our delegation was stunned by the adversity and determination of the Code Talk students currently enrolled in the program, and by the thoughtfulness and intentionality that goes into the design of the curriculum so that a safe, encouraging space is created that both nurtures and pushes each student to achieve her absolute best. The LAGC grant is used for an afternoon instructor who provides support to graduates until they are hired, keeping them working on projects to keep their skills fresh and their spirits high.

The luncheon at the Skirball Cultural Center was a smashing success! LAGC attendees learned about RBG and how she got the "Notorious" moniker, ate, drank, connected with friends, and heard about the work that the LAGC supports from a DIY girl and 2 New Village students. And, if you want to see what the Supreme Court will look like in the future, see the attached picture. Thanks to Marsha Smith for all of her help on this event!
