October is breast cancer awareness month! Monthly self- breast exams and mammograms are the best screening tools for most people to detect early cancerous changes. Current guidelines recommend screening mammograms every 1-2 years for most women over age 40 and even earlier for certain women. Breast cancer doesn't just affect women- it's estimated that in 2019 there will be over 2000 men affected by breast cancer. That's why monthly self-breast exams are so important! Flu season is almost upon us! Over the next few weeks we will be sharing important information regarding the influenza vaccination. First up today: Lets dispel some common myths about the flu vaccination!... Myth #1: The flu vaccine gives you the flu - The flu vaccination is an inactivated form of the influenza virus, therefore it cannot give you the actual flu. Some report mild body aches and soreness at injection site after their vaccination. This is a normal side effect and typically resolves within 1-2 days. Myth #2: I never get sick so I don't need the flu vaccine. - When you receive the flu vaccination you're not only protecting yourself but those around you. It's especially important for those who are around small children, those with compromised immune systems or the elderly to receive the flu vaccination. Myth #3: If I get the flu vaccine I cannot get the flu. - While the likelihood that you'll get the flu is lessened after receiving the flu vaccine, the risk still exists. The influenza vaccination is not effective against the flu for up to 14 days after administration- so it's possible that in this time frame you're exposed to the flu and then may become ill. What the flu vaccine does is helps to reduce the strength and duration of symptoms should you contract the flu after it becomes fully effective Flu vaccinations should be arriving to the clinic very soon for our primary care patients- we will keep you updated! Otherwise, most local pharmacies have them on hand now!

September is national head lice prevention month! Head lice is a common nuisance that usually occurs in breakouts at schools and daycare facilities. Head lice are small, winged insects that live in the hair. A common misconception is that those with head lice have dirty hair- head lice actually love clean hair! Treatment of head lice isn't always an easy task- removing all of the live insects and their eggs (nits) is tedious and daunting. There are several over-the-counter p...roducts available to help kill the lice. Head lice can be prevented through some easy steps: - avoid sharing anything that touches the hair or hair such as combs or hats - avoid coming into contact with someones head if you suspect they have head lice - do not lie on beds, couches, pillows or blankets that have come into contact with someone that has head lice If your head lice seems to be resistant and won't go away no matter what you try- visit your healthcare provider for further assistance!

School is back in session and we are seeing a rise in upper respiratory infections here in the clinic! Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are preventable viral illnesses- prevention comes in the form of good hand washing, covering your mouth when sneezing/coughing and not sharing food or drinks with those you think may be sick. URIs don't usually require antibiotic treatment as they're typically caused by viruses. Symptoms include: cough, sore throat, low-grade fever (usuall...y <101F), ear pain, congestion and body aches. Treatment is aimed at eliminating your symptoms. Most treatments for URIs are available over the counter at your local pharmacy or grocery store. If you think your illness may be more than a URI come by for a visit today! Clinic hours: M-F 9a-7p, Sat 9a-5p

Here at Wilmington Urgent Care & Family clinic we get lots of questions about HPV and what it is. HPV is the human papillomavirus.- it is transmitted through sexual intercourse and it's estimated that over 80% of people have the virus within their body- HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. HPV can be transmitted from one person to another even when there are no symptoms present. Most people's immune systems are able to clear the virus without any complicatio...ns and they may never even know they have the virus. HPV can cause cervical and other cancers including cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, or anus. It can also cause cancer in the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils. There is currently no test to determine if someone has HPV, the only way that someone might know if they have HPV is if they test positive on a routine pap smear or if they develop warts or other symptoms. Prevention is key regarding HPV. There is a vaccination available to prevent against the most common cancer causing types of HPV and right now it's recommended up until age 26. Safe sex practices can also help to prevent against HPV- using a condom correctly during every sexual encounter. Routine screenings by your healthcare provider can also help detect early changes to cervical cells that may lead to cervical cancer. Talk to your healthcare provider today if you think HPV vaccination might be right for you or your children. Make sure you're up to date on your preventative health visits with your primary doctor to ensure early detection of abnormalities!

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in the US. Early detection is key to identifying abnormal cervical cell changes and treating them appropriately. Anyone with a cervix over the age of 21 should consider a pap smear. There are different screening recommendations based on a person's age and history but most commonly recommendations are: -Age 21-30 should be screened for cervical cell abnormalities at least every 3 years... -Age 30-64 should be screened for cervical cell abnormalities and HPV every 3-5 years depending on the type of test that was performed -Once you reach age 65, if previous pap smears have been normal your healthcare provider may recommend to stop screenings Screening recommendations change if you have a screening pap smear that comes back with abnormalities. Your healthcare provider will discuss the options with you. Schedule your appointment for a pap smear with your primary care provider or OB/GYN and they can let you know how often you should be getting screened!

Summer is the time for lots and lots of bug bites! But how do we know what bug bites we need to worry about? Any bug bite associated with colored discharge, fever, body aches or extreme itching should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Typically most bug bites can be managed at home with an anti-histamine (benadryl) or a topical ointment for itching (calamine lotion or hydrocortisone). Protect yourself when outside by wearing long pants and shirts when you're in an area with a lot of bugs- make sure to use pest repellent too!
