These stories were written by the success stories, former ESL students, themselves! Thanks to their instructor, Aldo Robles, for his help. Jose Luis Altun Lopez Hi my name is Jose Luis Altun Lopez; I am from Pajapita San Marcos Guatemala, Centro America. I grew up In Mexico, and then I moved to Los Angeles when I was 14 years old.... I have a little more than one year at Diane Watson Career Training Center. And, I am finishing my last course; suspension and steering. When I started school, I didn’t know anything about mechanics. Before, I was studying English at Los Angeles Technology Center, and I heard about this program. I seeked help from my counselor and decided to join. I made a decision to take these classes, because I wanted to learn how to fix cars. So that’s why I registered. Mr. Robles is a very good teacher, thanks to him; I was able to work for Jiffy Lube. But now, that I know more about auto mechanic, I am working with a friend. He owns the auto shop and I’m glad that I can still count on Mr. Robles for help. I hope one day I can open my own shop and it is my biggest dreams. It has been a very hard year; my wife has helped me with the bills. I’ve been thru difficult times. Sometimes, I wanted to give up, but I kept going. Remember get a target and never give up, no matter what, just go ahead. Thanks to all of that, I have a set of new goals!

These L.A. Tech High School Students are College Students, Too! Basic Skills 75, Introduction to Postsecondary Education is the first in a series of four West Los Angeles College courses being offered to L.A. Tech students on our campus during the 2017-18 school year. Our first class meeting on November 7th was a great success, with 26 ambitious students in the adult secondary education and AC2T programs participating. Students will take short non-credit informational/prep...aratory college classes one day a week for 2-3 hours in the fall and winter along with their regular high school classes, and in spring 2018 they are set to transition to a full-credit course, Political Science 1, that counts for both LAUSD’s high school U.S. Government and LACCD’s General Ed requirements. These students will earn 5 high school credits and 3 college units at the same time upon successfully passing the course. The Poli Sci class will also meet just once a week, to enable students to continue making progress on their other classes and HiSET preparation. Counselors and teachers helped the students navigate the somewhat daunting online college enrollment process, and by the first week of the Basic Skills 75 class, approximately 45 LATC students had received their LACCD ID#s, enabling them to enroll in classes at any of the nine LACCD schools. This opportunity and partnership is in line with the state’s Adult Ed Block Grant push to accelerate student learning and create seamless pathways to higher education. Starting college while still attending the school they are already comfortable in is a great way to help nontraditional students overcome uncertainties about next steps after high school graduation or attaining their equivalency certificate. Field trips to our local community colleges are also a part of LATC’s smooth transition program. Two trips to visit L.A. Trade Tech College took place in the fall, a December trip is planned to go to WLAC, and another tour to L.A. City College is being planned for the spring. Trips to four-year schools are also in the planning stages, so students can start getting excited about transferring.

Siblings’ Success Story at L.A. Technology Center Clemence Balla is a cheerful young woman who smiles easily and often. Actually, Clemence has a lot to smile about these days, since she was recently hired as a Care Manager for the Sunrise Company, in Hermosa Beach. Clemence and her brother, Ghislain Balla, came to the United States from the French-speaking Central African country of Cameroon a country with one of the highest literacy rates on the continent less than one y...ear ago, in March of 2017. They were happy to learn of the English language classes available at Los Angeles Technology Center (LATC) and enrolled right away. Since their mother is a nurse, both Ghislain and Clemence have hearts for taking care of people. Shortly after enrolling in English classes, Ghislain got a job as a personal care attendant and began working full time. Clemence continued her basic ESL studies in the morning, and also enrolled in the Vocational ESL for Health Careers class in the afternoon. A very dedicated student, Clemence came to class every day and studied hard. She completed the class in early November and immediately set out to find a job. When asked if she was nervous about going to the job interview, Clemence said, No, I didn’t feel nervous at all. I felt so prepared because of all the things that I learned in the VESL class. I felt very confident. They were surprised that I knew so much about health care and I told them it was because of my VESL for Health class. Clemence is still studying hard at LATC, and plans to continue her studies when she completes the ESL program. Her long-term goal is to be a lawyer and possibly work in the medico-legal field. The dedicated mother of a curious and very bright three-year-old girl, Clemence has to stay on her toes to keep up with her daughter who watches English television programs and asks Clemence many questions in English. The LATC community is really proud of Clemence and we know she is headed for great things!
