During the late 19th and early 20th century consumers across the globe responded to the "Industrial Revolution" with a renewed interest in hand crafted objects by skilled artisans. Names such as Stickley, Roycroft, Wiliam Morris, C.R. Ashbee and Louis Tiffany became synonymous with art and design movement often referred to as "The Arts & Crafts Movement". This unique, hand-made black coffee pot was produced in Providence Rhode Island by a team of highly skilled workers at th...e Gorham Manufacturing Company. It was produced exclusively for exhibition at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. It is one of a very small number of objects in the Martele line that was decorated with inset gemstones. It is considered to be one of the finest American coffee pots in existence and is currently on loan for research purposes from one of our private clients. This pot was raised and decorated entirely by hand, hammer and chasing tools. No machine was used during the manufacturing process. Hammer marks are evident throughout the surfaces. Factory records indicate a total of 241.5 hours were dedicated to the creation of this magnificent work of art! Los Angeles Auction House will host their first live Fine and Decorative Arts sale at the historic Santa Monica Airport on January 15th 2015. The sale includes property from the former United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James, Lewis Douglas and his daughter, socialite Sharman Douglas. Miss Douglas was a close friend and confidant of the late Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden. Lots will include a John Constable cloud study at dusk and a portrait of the artist’s sister Mary, a photo album documenting an illustrious year in the life of Sharman Douglas with invitations from the King and Queen as well as photographs of social gatherings and celebrities including Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Jack Benny and more. Also featured are twenty signed Christmas cards with attached photographs from the Queen Mother and a substantial amount of personal correspondence from Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother.
