We must be PROactive not REactive to your health! Much like the standing ...#founder pose from #foundationtraining this active stretch from #egoscue focuses on stretching your posterior chain, more specifically the superficial back line laid out beautifully by @anatomytrainsofficial Next time you’re watching TV or on your phone, pull yourself out from between the cushions and have a seat on the floor with your back against the couch Lean forward and scoot your seat back as far into the couch as possible so when you sit up your back has to arch to meet the backrest This will be slightly uncomfortable, but don’t let your seat scoot out away from the couch while you slowly straighten both of your legs one at a time until you’re in this position. IF you’re able to get both legs straight, then next you will PULL your toes toward you EVENLY so that your feet are still straight and not getting torqued out to the right or left/into inversion or eversion Take breaks in between, but try to sit up straight, sexy double chin with your arms spread out like me, and straighten your legs as much as you can while pulling those toes back towards you - don’t forget to breathe! *This last part is what makes this an active stretch, much different than just bending over and touching your toes

For those trying not to come out of this quarantine with neck and low back pain, make sure you’re sitting with proper form - or better yet make sure you’re continuously changing positions every 30-45 minutes or as often as possible. You should also be taking frequent breaks to do some of the decompressing, relaxing, and strengthening exercises demonstrated in our previous posts. You must SIT STRONG and have your back muscles hold you up instead of allowing gravity ...to curl you forward and squish the weight of you’re body down to the joints of your spine, which over time give little by little until one day out of nowhere you have back pain. Quick tips on how to check yourself when seated to make sure you’re sitting tall and strong with your LOWER BACK ENGAGED, arching stomach forward (belly-button forward) which will automatically bring your upper body up and back holding your SHOULDERS BACK AND DOWN. Feet flat on the ground, legs not crossed Sit with your bottom as far back in the chair as possible Roll your hips forward, sticking your stomach out/forward, so there is an arch in your lower back It helps to put a round pillow or some type of reminder for you to arch your lower back like I do in the picture AFTER you roll your hips forward, THEN roll shoulders back and down If possible look straight or slightly up at a monitor, but when on a laptop this is harder to do, so just try and keep your neck straight and try not to look with your head down. Here is a simple neck stretch you can do without even leaving your chair as a simple break between whatever its is that has you stuck at your chair. Grab the bottom of the chair with one hand and gently lean away from that side. Bring your other arm up and over to gently pull your head away from the anchored side Fix your posture first like we just went over, and breathe deep during the stretch Don’t try to pop anything in your neck, just sit tall as possible Turn your head left and right slowly during the stretch to stretch different areas of your neck. #posture #posturecorrection #rehab #rehabilitation #core #corestrength See more

During these quarantined times we’ve all spent a little more time on our couch than we’re used to, but just like everything else in life, there is a right and a wrong way to do things including sitting on the couch. Even if you’re strong, your muscles can’t support you because the joints are aligned in a way they can’t en...gage the joints take all the heat. Second photo: Whether seated or laying down, your neck and lower back should always arch backward to put your muscles in a position to engage and support your spine in order to hold your body in an up and open position. I recommend putting something behind your lower back as well as your neck in order to support the curve in your neck and lower back such as a rounded pillow, rolled up towel, or better yet, the CerviPedic pillow that adjusts to your neck and can be used seated or laying down.
