Robert Kent Trench During his time at [UC] Santa Barbara he garnered a reputation as one of the world’s leading experts on the symbiotic relationship between corals and photosynthetic algae, zooxanthellae, in which corals provide the plankton shelter and CO2 in return for energy derived from sunlight. This work alongside his research into kleptochloroplasts won him the prestigious Miescher-Ishida Prize for his contribution to the field of biology in 1994. -Joe Baker... https://marinemadness.blog//the-black-lives-of-marine-bio/

Friday’s are for the birds! Check out this video we caught of a Great Cormorant. Here’s a fun fact about them: They spend most of the day quietly perched out of the water, preening, stretching, and resting. When foraging, they dive from the surface and swim underwater, but their plumage lacks the waterproofing of ducks and loons, so they come ashore between foraging sessions to warm and to dry the plumage, often holding the wings open for long periods. https://www.allaboutb...irds.org/g/Great_Cormorant/lifehistory #LBMI #BirdWatching #MarineLife #GreatCormorant

Jessie Isabelle Price Her PhD work centred around the bacterium, Pasteurella anatipestifer, and its impact on ducks. She later developed a vaccine for Long Island New Duck Disease after working on the cure for years. She later was offered a job at the USGS National Wildlife Center to study environmental contaminants and their impact on waterfowl. -Kristina Lynn... https://www.wildbiologist.com//hiddenfacesofwildlifescience #JessieIsabellePrice #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackBiologistsinHistory #HiddenFigures #SilentScientists #Bacterium #PasteurellaAbatipestifer #Ducks #NewDuckDiseaseVaccine #USGSNationalWildlifeCenter #EnvironmentalContaminants #Waterfowl #KristinaLynn

Joan Murrell Owens Dr. Owen’s work was focused around the study of coral life. She studied deep-sea button corals and described the new coral genus Rhombopsammia. In 1994, her work added a new species to the genus Letepsammia. -Kristina Lynn... https://www.wildbiologist.com//hiddenfacesofwildlifescience #JoanMurrellOwens #CoralLife #DeepSea #ButtonCorals #CoralGenus #Rhombospsammia #Letepsammia #Kristina Lynn #WildlifeBiologists #HiddenFigures

Happy #HispanicHeritageMonth the next few days we will be highlighting some noteworthy #MarineScientists who have made a difference in their field of work. María de los Ángeles Alvariño González Spanish American fishery research biologist and marine scientist Dr. Angeles Alvariño (19162005) became one of the few global authorities on certain types of marine plankton. She discovered 22 new species of ocean animals and made great contributions to the scientific understanding... of small marine life forms during the course of her career. Alvariño published over a hundred scientific books, chapters, and articles, and dedicated her later years to studying the historical aspects of early marine science and exploration. -Notablebiographies.com Click the link below to learn more about this amazing woman! https://www.notablebiographies.com///Alvari-o-Angeles.html
