COVID-19 is a serious disease and has had an appreciable impact on our membership with Fire having some of the largest numbers of COVID-positive workers in the County. We have been fortunate that we have not lost anyone to this illness, but make no mistake we have had many members and their families hit hard. The politics and emotions surrounding this pandemic and the impact of shutting down businesses are real and not to be downplayed, but the consequences of this disease a...re very real as well. Our own 2nd Vice President Dave Morse has been gracious enough to share his story regarding the impact of COVID on his family. Please take a moment to read Dave's testimony. We must do what is necessary to keep everyone safe. While this disease may not severely impact most of us, it certainly will impact some of our family members who are vulnerable. We must take precautions both at work and at home to stay safe and protect not only ourselves but those who may not do well with this disease. Brothers & Sisters, In preparation for our upcoming 48-96 Trial Shift Schedule Change, we have elected to distribute our calendars electronically this year. Since the trial will only be for one year we cannot print our normal two-year calendar. Today we are once again reminded of the dangers of our job as we learn that two Wildland #Firefighters from OC Firefighters, Local 3631 were critically burned in the #SilveradoFire. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and our brothers and sisters of Local 3631 as we pray for their recovery. The Fire Chief and President Gillotte have reached out to offer not only resources for the fire but access to our Peer Support and IAFF Burn Support Teams. In 2006 the Esperanza Fire was raging in Cabazon. The blaze would take the lives of 5 Firefighters and injure a dozen others. Local 1014 assisted USFS Engine 57’s station pack away the belongings of the men killed by the massive blaze. Together with the IAFF, we put together a service to honor and help our Federal Brothers in SB NF who have no rights to bargain, no rights to anything and are always undervalued. We rallied together to support our brothers and sisters. Let us ...never forget their sacrifice and let us honor them every time we train. Today we welcomed the City of Vernon to the Los Angeles County Fire Department! This has been many years in the making and we are happy to welcome them to our Local 1014 family! Special thank you to The City Council of Vernon and our own Supervisor Hilda Solis for her steadfast commitment to the community.
