Because of our prevailing winds from the west in California we get cool, moist ocean air blowing onshore. The sunniest and warmest beaches are the ones facing away from the winds and are in the lee of land. The fog is deflected away and the sun shines. Also the wave energy is refracted and generally the waves are gentler and the sand abundent. Most of the California coast south of Santa Barbara faces southwest so they have it made. In the central portion large southwest facing beaches are rare. Santa Cruz, Cayucos, Avila Beach have them.
