The weather can bring damaging winds to beautiful sunny Southern California. There really isn’t any way to keep debris out of your pool when the winds pick up, but there are ways to help protect your pool's chemistry and equipment. First and foremost, always keep your pool clean and maintained on a routine basis in order to reduce the risk of possible damage to your pool. If the task becomes too great for you, we at Living Waters Pool Service are ready to serve. When ...the Santa Ana winds come roaring through Southern California, the amount of flying dirt and debris can be overwhelming. No one is better able to measure the winds capability to move mounds of dirt about more than a pool owner. In just one windy day, the bottom of a pool can be inches thick in mud and debris (residents of Eastvale can relate most). We often ask our customers to become proactive during these windy times by emptying out the skimmer and pump baskets as much as possible until we return for weekly pool maintenance. Doing so, will help keep those unwanted repairs to a minimum. If the skimmer and pump fill up with debris and are not timely removed, the pump will work much harder, shortening it's life span and could even cause some major damage. From time to time I am asked if a pool cover helps. NO, they do not! We very highly suggest not using a pool cover. It could actually cause damage and truly do not help in keeping out dirt and debris. The cover may hold some debris out temporarily, but whatever lays on top will fall in eventually once the cover is rolled off. Also, the winds can easily lift up a corner and blow it around your yard. Falling branches and flying objects could cause damage to a cover as well. Therefore, we believe that pool covers are not sufficient in protecting your swimming pool from dirt or windy conditions. Make sure that all patio furniture, grills, pool toys and other equipment are put away or secured. All planters should be topped with bare dirt or rocks. Ground covers need to be heavy enough that they are not blown around your yard or into the pool. Wood chips nor mulch are never recommended in surrounding landscapes, unless you want your pool to look like a pond. Before the windy weather approaches, walk the yard and remove any dead or loose branches...and finally, trim your trees, trim your trees and yes, trim your trees!!!
