April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and The Livermore Police Department encourages drivers to give the phone a break and focus on the road. In the month of April, L.P.D. will have additional officers on patrol specifically looking for drivers who violate the state’s hands-free cell phone law.... When you are driving, give the phone a rest, Livermore Police Sergeant Justin Lash said. A driver’s number one focus should be on the road. Anything that distracts you from the task of driving, especially a phone, puts yourself and others at risk. According to the 2020 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, more than 75% of surveyed drivers listed Distracted Driving because of TEXTING as their biggest safety concern. Not driving distracted is a simple, but significant behavior change, Sgt. Lash said. The goal is to increase compliance with the hands-free cell phone law and keep people safe. Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or other electronic device while behind the wheel. Drivers under 18 are not allowed to use a phone for any reason, including hands-free. If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over and park at a safe location. Drivers should silence their phones or put the phone out of reach, such as the glove box or trunk. Funding for distracted driving enforcement operations are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NATIONAL TAKE DOWN TOBACCO DAY The tobacco industry has a long history of targeting vulnerable communities, especially youth, to sell their products to. Now, cities across the country are taking bold action to take down enticingly sweet but extremely harmful tobacco. Livermore is proud to be one of the first local municipalities in the state to protect our kids from flavored tobacco products and, since then, over a hundred jurisdictions have joined us. We want to ensure that Livermore is a safe and healthy place to live, work, study, and play for all! Learn more about the effects of flavored tobacco at www.flavorshookkids.org

Congratulations and Happy Retirement to Officer Rich Zogaric It has been an honor and a privilege to have worked with Officer Zogaric for the past 20 years. During his 20-year run at this department, Zogaric worked a variety of special assignments (patrol, DARE, youth academy facilitator, narcotics K-9 handler, NetRMS project manager, mall officer, financial crimes detective, etc.). We are very proud of your collective accomplishments that have served the residents of Livermore. Thank you.

RECORDS and SUPPORT STAFF APPRECIATION You won’t see these teams out on the streets, but they are definitely working hard at the Livermore Police Department! Today is Law Enforcement Records and Support Personnel Appreciation Day... We want to recognize the Records Division and Property & Evidence for the hard work they do every day to support LPD. Records reviews and approves nearly 8,000 police reports every year. In addition, they assist the public in our front lobby with citation sign-offs, permits, vehicle releases, report requests, and more. The Property and Evidence team processed 7,272 items of property last year. This team handles the organization, storage, and preservation of every item booked by officers; a truly large task! Thanks for all you do!

***NO SHAVE NOVEMBER*** The Livermore Police Department has teamed up with the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District to sponsor the annual Shop with A Cop program. Every year, this program allows LPD employees to adopt a child in need within our community. The child is treated to an unforgettable day of shopping and breakfast with members of LPD and LVJUSD. Donated funds are used to allow each student the opportunity to buy presents for their family members and/...or themselves, helping to ensure a brighter holiday season for the student and their family. Funding for this program is raised in two ways: 1. By community members contribution via GoFundMe at https://bityl.co/4ISw 2. By LPD employees making a personal contribution of $75. For contributing to this great cause, employees are allowed to go the month of November without shaving their facial hair or females are permitted to wear a streak of blue in their hair/blue nail polish. When you see one of our employees sporting a beard or blue hair, know that they contributed to this truly life-changing program, and you can too!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 28, 2020 Livermore Police Department Awarded Grant to Improve Traffic Data Reporting... Livermore, Calif. Livermore Police Department received a $80,145.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to streamline processes to collect and report traffic data. Accurate and timely data is critical to the safety of our roads, Livermore PD Sergeant Justin Lash said. This funding will help paint a clearer picture of our biggest traffic safety issues. This program is new for 2021 and is an effort to improve how quickly crash data is collected and reported, OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. High quality safety data is critical. It’s used to determine the nature of our road safety problems and it informs our actions in how best to address them. We are happy to provide local agencies with the necessary tools to develop or enhance their electronic traffic reporting systems. Grant funds will be used to: Develop a new, or update an existing, electronic crash reporting system with software that is able to submit data to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Develop an electronic citation system. The grant program runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021.
