Mandelbaum Brings Functional Back to Medicine Lisa Mandelbaum L.Ac, Dipl. O.M., FMP announces the opening of her Integrated Acupuncture and Functional Medicine practice. Though Mandelbaum has been a practicing acupuncturist and herbalist for over ten years, she recently completed a year-long Functional Medicine training program. ... With the opening of her new Nevada City office, Mandelbaum states, I have always loved practicing Chinese medicine, but couldn’t help feeling that I could learn more in order to better help my patients. Functional Medicine was the perfect complement. While a Chinese Medicine practitioner uses acupuncture and herbs to remedy imbalances in the body, a Functional Medicine doctor employs thorough inquiry with state of the art medical testing to diagnose and understand the root cause of illness. If a patient comes in with insomnia and anxiety, says Mandelbaum, acupuncture and herbs can begin to calm down the patient’s central nervous system. However, by employing targeted functional medicine tools, I can create a comprehensive and life changing treatment protocol, addressing the patient’s brain chemistry and adrenal welfare. Mandelbaum also adds, Too often in the practice of medicine, patients are given various medications, and their diagnoses is based on what drugs work. This is both frustrating and expensive, and often leads to more sickness and desperation. Mandelbaum works with all age groups and treats everything from back pain to hormone imbalance, carpel tunnel to insomnia. I love what I do, she declares. I am excited to use my medical sleuthing skills, my tenacity, and my love of people to help my patients optimize their lives. Life is too short to feel sick and be in pain. Lisa Mandelbaum is a California licensed acupuncturist, and nationally certified Diplomate of Oriental Medicine as well as a Certified Functional Medicine practitioner. Her clinic is located in The Miner’s Village, 206 Sacramento Street, suite 202, Nevada City. You can also visit her website at lisamandelbaum.com or call her at (530) 615-1649.

Welcome spring! According to Chinese medicine, spring is related to the liver/gallbladder organs and wood element. Flow: In Chinese medicine, the liver is in charge of the smooth flow of qi (energy) and blood. Spring is a perfect season to begin an exercise program in order to get the body moving after the long dormant winter months. Stretch: According to Chinese medicine, the liver nourishes the tendons. This season is a wonderful time to embrace yoga or a good stretch...ing routine in order to keep the body loose and agile. Greens: The liver is related to the color green. Take advantage of seasonal produce offerings by eating dark leafy produce: kale, collard greens, spinach, and dandelion root. These greens not only move qi, but also serve to cleanse the liver of toxics. Lemons: Sour is the flavor of the liver. Spring is a perfect for sipping on warm lemon water or flavoring food with fresh lemon juice. Pause: Anger is the emotion of spring. As windy spring dances between warm sunny days and cool rain, many people find themselves frustrated and short fused. As these emotions bubble, try to pause and shake it off before angrily charging forward. Acupuncture: An acupuncture treatment that ties to seasonal shift is a fabulous modality for staying in balance. As a practitioner of Chinese medicine, my spring treatments move blood and qi, clean the liver, and offer a little stillness during this blustery season. Welcome to February 8, 2016: the year of the fire monkey. According to the Chinese zodiac, the monkey is a wild, playful animal, who is also creative, strong willed, and intelligent. As the elements fire, earth, metal, water and wood move through each zodiac cycle, this year, we are actively celebrating a fire element. Pairing a playful monkey with a fire element puts us smack in the middle of a frantic, fun and fortuitous year. The monkey is known to be quick on his fee...t and often enjoys mixing play with daily tasks. Likewise, 2016 will move at a lightening speed with many turns dotted in humor and wit. The year of the fire monkey is an optimistic year for finances, politics and real estate. As a monkey resorts to many different strategies for completing a task, 2016 proves a time to employ unconventional solutions to resolve old problems. The year of the fire monkey offers a perfect landscape for taking risks, schooling and exploring. And with all this wild monkey energy zipping around, it is beneficial to rethink your fitness/ self care routines as stress needs to be burned off and stamina sustained. This is a year worthy of hearty welcome as we stretch out have fun- play with ideas - and embrace the monkey’s wild ride. Happy New Year!

January is a perfect time to rebuild qi and blood. One food that is particularly great for this goal: bone broth. Made from cooked bone marrow, bone broth is considered jing. In Chinese medicine jing is a precious and vital substance that we get from our parents at birth. While difficult to replace, jing can be supported slowly, over time, and bone broth is a great way to begin this nourishing process. While a fabulous tonic, drinking bone broth each day has additional ...benefits: 1. Gut Health: The gelatin in the bone broth (found in the knuckles, feet, and other joints) gives added integrity to our intestinal lining. This in turn helps to cure chronic diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances. 2. Strong Immunity: A healthy gut translates into a strong immune system. As the gut houses seventy to eighty percent of our immune tissue, it is often the first entry point for exposure to pathogens (bad bacteria and virus’ that can cause disease). Therefore, if your gut immune system is strong, you have the ability to avoid illness. 3. Joint Support: Taking glucosamine supplements to help with joint pain is common protocol for joint health. However, bone broth contains glucosamine too! Plus bone broth has the added bonus of hosting other nutrients that aid in keeping your joints healthy and pain-free. 4. Sleep Better: The glycine in bone broth has been shown in several studies to help people sleep better while also improving memory. Making bone broth is simple. Start with some bones from the butcher shop or left over from a meal. Roast the bones first, and then put them in a crock-pot or Dutch oven. Top with water and boil on low until the stock turns dark and/or the bones begin to break down (about 12-24 hours). Filter off the fat and debris using a coffee filter and store remaining liquid in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze the broth in an ice cube tray for easy servings.

Happy New Year! As an acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner, I am always excited to share the incredible benefits of acupuncture. Here are just a few: 1. Lower Stress: An acupuncture treatment can bring your body from a state of sympathetic dominance (which means a constant state of running) into one of parasympathetic (more relaxed). 2. Better Sleep: Not all insomnia is the same! Hence the beauty of Chinese medicine is that each acupuncture treatment is tail...ored to your specific sleeping story. If you have trouble going to sleep, or you wake up at 3:00 AM, or you are vividly dreaming, regular acupuncture treatments can greatly enhance the quality and quantity of your sleep. 3. Increase Energy: Many patients note that they feel sleepy and relaxed after a treatment. However, many also note that upon waking the next day, they are renewed, energetic and focused. With regular treatment, this feeling seems to last longer and longer. As you welcome a new year, think about adding a powerful and an effective healing modality into your healthy living tool kit. Give my office a call (530) 615 1649, email, ([email protected]) or visit my web page (lisamandelbaum.com). I welcome introducing you to acupuncture and balanced living.
