About two weeks into quarantine I asked some friends if I could photograph them at their doorsteps. I wanted to see people safely but also wanted to record a strange moment in time- in effect, satiating a mutual feeling of loneliness. - Laura Kiernan, artist.

Over the past few years I’ve been spending time in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta area. It is one of the most fascinating places ecologically. There are many winding levees, blackberry brambles, and fig trees growing in the water. I come to areas like this as a bit of a foreigner, having grown up in New York City. Similarly, the delta is a place of constant change. This reciprocal relationship is paramount to my work. - Laura Kiernan, artist.

My name is Laura Kiernan, I was born in New York City to two Irish immigrants. We I spent the first several years of my life back to Ireland where I remember taking photos as a very young child, my dad had two Polaroid cameras around the house that he used for documenting things he needed to fix at work. I would take pictures of my family and favorite toys. My parents don’t consider themselves artists, but I am deeply inspired by the photographs they took of my brothers and ...me in those early years in Ireland- a time that is largely before my own memory. These photographs have greatly influenced my interests and aesthetic which often combines chance, the natural world, and portraiture. I initially studied Horticulture at Merritt College and then went to SFAI to get my BFA in Photography. I continue to seek inspiration from the natural world in my work as a gardener as well as the studio manager for Bay Area-based Todd Hido. - This week we’re highlighting the work of Oakland-based Laura Kiernan. Follow along on our feed over the next few days as Laura takes us through her experimental, analog, and portraiture based photographic practice. See more

Currently, I'm working towards a long term photo-book. Amidst the record-breaking wildfires we've had in California, I wanted to focus on what made me stay in this state for so long in the first place: the beauty of it all. Right now I'm culling through my archive of photos I've taken throughout the years along with being more disciplined about bringing a camera with me wherever I go, which is something I never used to do. The photos in this post were all taken over the past... few months, and I'm almost positive that they'll be in the book. I tend to work really slowly on personal projects like these, and then all at once when I get a jolt of creative energy (which I, unfortunately, do not have an infinite supply of). Hopefully the book will be finished and printed by the end of 2021. Maybe posting so publicly about it will hold me accountable! As we wait with bated breath for the final election results to come in, we’re looking towards the future with a sneak peak from @jacobcruzrine, our featured artist. Thank you @jacobcruzrine !!

A good friend and former colleague of mine hired me for one of my first portrait sessions ever. She is an awesome clothing designer (who recently moved to NY!). We had a lot of fun on this shoot and she was down to walk around her neighborhood and really find the light. This week photographer @jacobcruzrine is taking over our feed! Follow along over the next few days as Jacob takes us through his bodies of work. Jacob is also available for commissions, head to his profile to learn more!

I was commissioned to take these portraits of Maisha, who happened to have this amazing accidental photo setup in their backyard. The light that day was really harsh, but they had a big mesh tarp over their backyard that acted as a huge diffuser, so the light was harsh enough to cast some shadows but not harsh enough to blow anything out. That, mixed with the white wall, and the concrete floor, made their backyard perfect to photograph in. Maisha was also a joy to photograph! Hi everyone! My name is Jacob. I’m a photographer and filmmaker living in Oakland. I started really getting into photography back in early high school, when Flickr was still going strong. I decided to go to SFAI for photography, which really shaped my practice. I’m doing a lot of portraiture these days, which I love, but I’m also working on expanding my photographic practice to document more of daily life. I also make short films about Guam, being Chamoru, and am working on making more narrative shorts (hopefully a feature one day!). This week photographer @jacobcruzrine is taking over our feed! Follow along over the next few days as Jacob takes us through his bodies of work. Jacob is also available for commissions, head to his profile to learn more!

We asked our featured artist of the week Alex Goodwin: How has the pandemic affected your practice? Do you find yourself picking up old projects, starting new ones? l haven't been making any new work. This has been a time of reflecting on the long-standing disparities and injustices highlighted by the pandemic.

This week our featured artist is Alex Goodwin! We asked him: As someone working in a photo gallery, you're surrounded by some of the best photographs in the world all day. How does this inspire and inform the art you make? Being surrounded by such high caliber work is definitely inspiring. I get to have a more intimate relationship with these photographic objects than I would if I was seeing them in a gallery or museum. Robert Adam's book Los Angeles Spring is hugely influen...tial to me. Whenever I look at one of Adam's gelatin silver prints I'm in awe. He's a masterful printer and I'm as seduced by the quality of the print as I am by the imagery. I also look at a lot of non-photographic art and media. Dozie Kanu and Robert Grosvenor are two artists whose work I'm really drawn to. Over the next few weeks we will be profiling a number of artists selected by the LightSource staff working in photography across the Bay Area. These artists represent a small but substantive cross section of the incredible talent we get to work with on a daily basis.

This week our featured artist is Alex Goodwin. We asked him : When did you start taking photos? What were you most interested in documenting? Have your interests changed? I started taking photographs when I was a teenager. After moving to San Francisco in my early 20's I began to think more critically about what I was photographing and started making "serious" pictures. I'm most interested in documenting developed environments. I'm also fascinated by vernacular architecture a...nd how automobiles have influenced the landscape. I don't think my interests have changed much, I've really just honed in on trying to emulate the feeling I get when I'm in these spaces. When I first started photographing I would include people in my photographs, but now I rarely photograph a person unless it's myself. Over the next few weeks we will be profiling a number of artists selected by the LightSource staff working in photography across the Bay Area. These artists represent a small but substantive cross section of the incredible talent we get to work with on a daily basis.
