Learn About District Infrastructure Improvement Projects The District is currently working on several projects to keep our collection system in top working condition and to ensure the safe transmission of wastewater throughout the system. Below is the status of some of our current infrastructure projects. Leucadia Pump Station Rehabilitation Project... The Leucadia Pump Station is the District’s second largest pump station. It pumps approximately 3.2 million gallons of wastewater per day to the Encina Wastewater Treatment Plant. The pump station is located at the District’s headquarters site and services the southeastern portion of Carlsbad and the eastern portion of Encinitas. The project will include the installation of five new pumps and a permanent emergency pump in an overflow basin. The new equipment will further bolster the District’s ability to respond to emergencies and prevent sewer spills. Additionally, the District will install a super-oxygenation system for corrosion prevention, odor control, and safety. Construction started in September 2020 and is expected to be completed by June 2021. Diana Pump Station Project The Diana Pump Station services the west area of Old Leucadia. The station pumps approximately 360 thousand gallons of wastewater per day. This project will upgrade the station’s electronics, replace pumps, and add an emergency generator for operation during loss of power. It is anticipated that construction will begin in the Spring of 2021. 2020 Gravity Sewer Repair Project This Project includes the repair of 21 sites throughout our service area that includes over 1,000 feet of new sewer pipe, 17 new manholes, and 2 spot repairs on existing sewer lines. These repairs will keep the wastewater flowing in the pipes and ensure the integrity of the sewer system. Minor traffic impacts may occur at each site during construction. Construction will occur between Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. Learn more in our e-newsletter and subscribe for biannual updates here: https://conta.cc/3pWnDus

Happy Thanksgiving from Leucadia Wastewater District Are you frying your turkey this holiday season? If so, you might need to dispose of a large amount of cooking oil. Your first instinct might be to dump the oil, either outside or down the drain, but both of these options can have negative environmental effects.... When disposing of a few gallons of oil, it's difficult to follow traditional disposing methods recommended for small-scale disposal. For this reason, it is best to let the oil cool, place it back in its original container, and take it to your local recycling center. Waste Management provides trash service for Carlsbad residents, and EDCO provides trash service for Encinitas residents. On Saturday October 24th from 10am-2pm, turn in prescription drugs safely and anonymously for The DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Even though it starts with a "P", Prescriptions are not one of the 3 P's that belong in your toilet. Prescription drugs aren't always broken down in the treatment system, and the compounds can end up in the ocean if flushed. Exposure to even low levels of drugs has negative effects on fish and other aquatic species, and also may neg...atively affect human health. Tossing medications into the garbage also has its consequences as it poses a threat to the health of the environment and the community at large. Locate nearby safe disposal sites here: https://takebackday.dea.gov/ #NoDrugsDownDrains #DontRushToFlush

Today, try to Imagine a Day Without Water. This national education campaign is the sixth annual day to raise awareness and educate America about the value of water. No water to drink, or wash your hands with. No water to shower, flush the toilet, or do laundry. Hospitals would close without water. Firefighters couldn't put out fires and farmers couldn't water their crops. Disease would spread. This year, as communities across America faced the public health threat of the coro...navirus pandemic, water and wastewater systems continued to do their job through the crisis. Sign up to participate and learn more about the history of this campaign, the resources available, and who else is involved here: https://imagineadaywithoutwater.org/ California Association of Sanitation Agencies

Sometimes you’ll notice an odor coming from your sink or shower drain that smells like rotten eggs. This could be sewer gas, especially if it’s coming from a bathroom sink or drain that isn’t used much. Sinks, toilets, and showers all have a P-trap that helps prevent sewer gas from coming back up your pipes and into your home. These traps hold a small amount of water which helps prevent gases from entering your bathroom or other areas that have drains. When the P-trap is full, any lingering gas travels up a separate pipe that vents through your roof, keeping it out of your house. If you notice an odor coming from your sink or other drain, run the water for a while to fill the trap. If the problem persists, you may need to get a plumber to check to make sure that your trap and vent are working properly.
