Lesbian and Gay Psychotherapy Association 22.01.2021

WHO ARE LAGPA?: The Lesbian and Gay Psychotherapy Association of Southern California (LAGPA) was established in 1992 as an organization of mental health professionals interested in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients. Many LAGPA members are themselves gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans or gender-fluid and every other color of the rainbow or the gender spectrum. We celebrate our diverse membership. We do, of course, welcome as active allies all straight hetero-normative... people who align with our work. The LAGPA members in the Directory of therapeutic services on our website www.lagpa.org are licensed or pre-licensed professionals actively involved in expanding the role of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and marriage, family & child therapists who serve the greater LGBTIQ community of Southern California. While LAGPA is oriented toward mental health professionals, individuals desiring to join LAGPA are not required to be licensed or even to be in the helping professions. There are separate sister-organizations for the LGBT community for the medical and legal professions in the Los Angeles area SCLMA for the doctors, LGBT Bar for the lawyers and we hold joint social events a couple of times a year, most notably the glorious pool party which is the highlight of the summer social calendar. In the past, the LAGPA Board has welcomed individuals who are members of other professions onto our Board, though the majority of Board members are usually psychotherapists or psychologists. LAGPA’s purpose is to facilitate social and professional networking for mental health professionals in the greater Los Angeles area. LAGPA seeks to bring people together for academic and social events, to develop educational community outreach activities, to foster and promote a positive gay & lesbian identity, and to serve as role models for all members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender-fluid community. Members of LAGPA are committed to the process of developing the finest psychological skills for working with clients confronted with the complexity of personal issues related to being LGBTIQ in a homophobic world.
