The U.S. FDA is set to approve Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Mr. Chadwick Boseman’s death was a sad shock! His passing at age 43 from colon cancer has put a spotlight on a disease that’s on the rise among young people. According to the CDC, it’s the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the USA. historically, colorectal cancer impacts those in their mid to late 60s. However, 15% of patients are now under 50 years old. Findings also suggest that colorectal cancer rates are ~20% higher in African Americans than non-Hispanic whit...es, with a ~40% higher death rate. . . . Those at greatest risk for colorectal cancer include: people w inflammatory bowel disease, either ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease; those with a genetic susceptibility called hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HPNCC), aka Lynch syndrome, or a family history of the disease; people with a prior history of colon cancer or intestinal polyps. Smokers and obesity are also at increased risk of colorectal cancer. Diets high in fiber, low in red meat, staying active & maintaining a normal weight are associated with less colon cancer. It’s believed the rise in obesity is linked to the rise in colorectal cancer in those age <50. . . . The American Cancer Society changed its guidelines in 2018. They now recommend people with average risk to get colorectal screenings at 45, not 50.
