How is Jesus not like Casper? Luke 24:36-37 "Jesus stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." They were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. Jesus said, "Why are you frightened? Look at my hands, my feet. It is I myself. Touch me and see." How in today's "Don't touch" world do we "look upon, touch, and see" the risen Christ and be this "real" in the world? Pastor Peg is excited to explore this Sunday 11:00 a.m. April 18th. Join us on Zoom. ... lutheran.churchofthemaster.org See more

Join us on Zoom 11:00 a.m. Palm Sunday, March 28 Christians around the world come to Holy Week this year having traveled through much suffering - a disproportionately impacting pandemic, - agonizing systemic racism, - heartrending gun violence. And more. ... Suffering is close on screens if not in our communities. As we enter Holy Week, we come ear to ear with the suffering of Jesus, which we may not want to hear, but we find courage to listen because this is an enactment of saving grace. In pondering this story we see afresh how present God is to the world's suffering. In the suffering of Jesus we see God meeting us on the cross with outstretched arms toward all the world. Jesus is not a return of King David, but rather an entirely different sort of king. In Mark 12 we hear people delighted in being reminded the Messiah would come with connections to the well-known King David. Like David, so also Jesus. Hurrah and Hosanna, they shout meaning save us. But the story unfolds and ‘hosannas’ turn to cries of ‘crucify.’ It calls us to re-think what kind of leader/king/queen/savior we might be hoping for ourselves. Are we hoping for a solver and fixer of all things amiss? Or are we open to the Savior who comes as Jesus comes, utterly outside our expectations? As we listen to the Passion According to Mark, we’re invited to reflect on what kind of king this is, one who enters into the suffering of the world with a love that costs nothing less than everything to use a T.S. Eliot phrase. What might it mean for our lives today, for us as Church, to follow this Jesus who entrusts his future and his fruitfulness into the hands of the God he gets to know in prayer? In reading Mark, I’ve been awed by how often Jesus leaves his disciples to go off into prayer. Jesus communes with God and discovers there what it means to trust the Almighty’s love and call. Jesus is empowered by prayer to into the world announcing and embodying good news. Jesus shows us what God is up to transformation not by might, but by the costly presence of love. "The king of love, my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never." A reign of love is now set in motion. Love is in charge, not fear. Mercy sets the agenda, not judgment. Forgiveness holds the future, not shame. Hope greets us at the tunnel’s end, not despair. The Passion Story isn’t new, but it’s meant to become new each time we hear it. We’re invited to trust that all the powers of evil have found their match in this love. Evil loses. Life wins. Listen for how God saves Jesus, for this is how God saves us too by costly love. The story reminds us that even on days when we feel abandoned, we’re not. God is with us all the way, every day. No low is too low that God doesn’t meet us there, raising us to choose life because love has chosen us. Join us on Zoom at 11:00 a.m. Palm Sunday, March 28 to hear this story of world-changing love. -

Yes, I agree, Bishop M. B. Curry, love is not a sentiment, but a decision, to turn me into we. Lutheran teaching calls it neighborology. I will speak to this on Sunday, September 27, as LCM celebrates 80 years of ministry. 11:00 am Zoom live Holy Communion. See you then. Link is on website and in my Eblast. Or call LCM 310-473-1055. We welcome you! +Pastor Peg
