Any thoughts on the arrest in Arcata by the Humboldt University officer?

Travis Reinking went on a shooting spree in Nashville leaving several people killed. He previously had his guns taken away from him and was not legally able to own or possess firearms. The confiscated guns were returned to his father, who thereafter returned them to Mr. Reinking. It would seem that the laws governing ownership and possession of guns did not prevent this attack. Additionally, I ask where the failure and/or breakdown in our system occurred? With so many people... advocating gun control, or 2nd amendment rights, it seems this is a perfect opportunity for a discussion. Was the breakdown with the father for returning the guns (whom I will add should be criminally culpable to some degree for these deaths in my opinion), is it with the police for returning the guns to a person likely to give them back to Mr. Reinking, or is the failure with our government agencies who, somehow, should have been responsible for this man's access to his guns? Any thoughts?

Facebook has admitted to scanning our personal and private messages on messenger. The rationalization seems reasonable (scanning for illicit and/or illegal content). However, this seems to be the proverbial "slippery slope" often referred to in law. If we accept such scanning, what does this open the door to? Any thoughts?

The mayor of Oakland has warned her community of an impending ICE raid. And now president Trump is indicating that he's considering litigation against her for impeding a federal investigation. Under the supremacy clause, Federal legislation is Supreme Over local rules regulations and statutes. Therefore, if they can show that the mayor's actions were a violation of a federal statute, the Oakland mayor may be subject to criminal fines, penalties, or worse. Any thoughts as to how this should go?
