New update about the Family Court reopening: It's set for May 26, 2020 and it's going to be very focused on not having people in the courthouses if they don't have to be there. That means telephonic or video appearances, electronic filing of documents and dealing with clerks outside of the Courthouse to do things like getting copies of documents from files. I've already been getting the notices of hearings being reset into August. There is a backlog of 12,000 cases the Family... Court from the shutdown period and getting these cases heard will be the Court's priority over the scheduling of new matters. Patience is going to be the watchword as the Court pushes its way through the new normal.

What we know: The San Diego Superior Court held a webinar this week about where we are and where we are going. The big takeaways are: 1. We hope for a "soft reopening" of the Courts at the end of May, likely May 26. This means minimal physical appearances and video based appearances.... 2. We are going to probably see filing dropboxes and, maybe, the family court will be integrated into the e-filing system. 3. Most important, for those with child or spousal support issues, we can mail an unfiled motion the other party and the judicial officer hearing your case will have discretion to make the order retroactive to date of filing. This means if you've been impacted by the shutdown, we need to act quickly in order to preserve your right to a retroactive support order.
