Wonderful News!!! GIP Client Kerry Robinson was exonerated and released today! At approximately 3:30 p.m. on January 8, 2020, Kerry walked out of Coffee Correct...ional Facility a free man, after spending nearly 18 years in prison for a rape that he did not commit. Earlier in the morning, a judge vacated Mr. Robinson's conviction and the state dismissed the charges against him. New, exculpatory DNA evidence helped show that Mr. Robinson is innocent of the 1993 rape and robbery of a woman in her home. He was accused of being one of three perpetrators, armed with a long-barreled gun. Mr. Robinson's wrongful conviction was based entirely on an incentivized cooperator and faulty forensic expert testimony. But thanks to your support and GIP's diligent work on his case (along with co-counsel Rodney Zell), he is now free. friendly reminder that this is how minneapolis police wrote up george floyd's death. absent video, we would have been stuck with their narrative. friendly remi...nder that without christian cooper's video, we would have relied on amy cooper's 911 call, which sounds like a woman who is in actual distress. friendly reminder that one day you may be called to be a juror. and a defense attorney is going to instruct you that you are forbidden to convict if the prosecution has not proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. this is what the defense means. that legal standard is not academic, it is not a loophole, and you must uphold it strictly like a life depends on it--because it does. you cannot "wait for the facts to come out" because in this system, facts are developed, not gathered, and they depend on who has the power to decide what they are. eyewitness testimony accounts for 70-80% of false convictions--and that is staggering. not everybody has the luxury of clear, beginning-to-end video and prosecutors constantly try to build their case on the shifting sands of words, but the truth is people can be mistaken; people can misremember; and they can outright lie. that is true, and perhaps especially true, of people who are immunized by power--people like police officers and nice, educated ladies who run investment firms. may this be one of the takeaways here and may it forever haunt you.
