Supreme Court Justice Gorsuch is surprising us all. He is arguing that police should not be able to enter a person's home without a warrant just because they've committed a misdemeanor. I am a Federal Criminal Defense attorney. I could just as easily have represented Ms. Laughlin and would have been thrilled with this result for her. But, as I am not her attorney and as someone who represents white collar clients regularly, I think that the disparity in sentencing that she received compared to other non-celebrity defendants who don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay fines, the leniency of her sentence is outrageous.
