IN PARADISUM DEDUCANT TE ANGELI... It is with great sorrow that we share the sad news of the demise of His Excellency, Most Rev. EDMUNDO M. ABAYA, S.Th.D., D.D...., Archbishop Emeritus of Nueva Segovia. Archbishop Abaya was the third Bishop of Laoag serving there for two decades (1978-1999). He was the first appointee of St. John Paul II as bishop in the Philippines and was ordained in the episcopal order on 19 January 1979. He was elevated as Metropolitan Archbishop by the same pope in 1999, making him the first Ilocos Sur native to serve as Archbishop of Nueva Segovia (1999-2005). He took possession of the archdiocese on 8 September 1999. He was responsible in the Episcopal Coronation of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc in 1980, making the jumpstart of the devotion. With his demise, the two provinces of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur lost a magnanimous and loving Shepherd. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EVERYTHING, APO ARCHBISHOP!
