EVERYONE 18 and older should have an Advance Directive for Health Care. This document allows you to appoint someone to make your healthcare decisions if you are unable. Remember the tragic case of Terri Schiavo? She had a heart attack at age 26, and was in a persistent vegetative state. Her husband argued Terri would not have wanted to be kept alive by means of artificial nutrition and hydration, and her parents argued in favor of the measures. The Schiavo case involved 14 ...appeals and numerous motions, petitions, and hearings in the Florida courts; five suits in federal district court; extensive political intervention at the levels of the Florida state legislature, Governor Jeb Bush, the U.S. Congress, and President George W. Bush; and four denials of certiorari from the Supreme Court of the United States. This all could have been avoided if Ms Schiavo had executed an Advance Healthcare Directive. Among other provisions, it allows the person signing it to indicate whether he or she wants to be kept alive through artificial means or just be allowed to be kept comfortable and die naturally. Sara Senger has been assisting people with Advance Healthcare Directives for 30 years.
