Update for the week of May 4th

Laurel M. Morello. DDS 18.10.2020

Note: If you are not receiving our office emails please email us at [email protected] so we can be certain you are on our list and receiving these vital updates. We've had three updates since 3/15 and there will be more. Thank you kindly! GREETINGS EVERYONE! Hope you are all staying safe and continue to shelter. It's been so cool to hear a shout-out from you wherever you are. I see lots of creative juices flowing from the FB and Instagram posts ... I get to see you i...n a different way! The office will remain closed the upcoming week of April 20th to routine, non-emergency visits. I have been in to see emergencies and had numerous telehealth virtual exams and consultations. Please don't hesitate to call with your questions or concerns. It's a good time to catch up on any questions you may have about the variety of sleep breathing disorders including snoring and the multitude of options from simple exercises to growth and development of the airway. Would love to share the knowledge. May be a glimmer of light on the horizon today, but we shall see how that unfolds. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon. Remember most of our good dental health is in the home thorough brushing, flossing interdental picks, and floridated rinses and toothpastes. A bi-weekly rinse of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed 3:1 with water keeps the healthy oral flora in charge by diluting the bad bacteria numbers. Several reports have shown that it MAY assist in staving off the coronavirus but my take on that is have the healthiest immune system you can have. Key to this is a healthy mental state ... do things you love. Take care and shelter... Dr. Laurel Team Morello

Last Friday we celebrated our holiday party a little early. We took a lovely hike through Torrey Pines, enjoyed some spa time (Pedi's all around), and ended the day with a wonderful lunch at P.F. Changs. It was such a delightful day out and about and all together!

We have a new Gramma on board! Dr. Laurel is the proud grandmother of her daughter's daughter, Taviana. Just over three weeks old she is a thriving, gulping phenom. Central Coast is her home...ugh! It's a good thing Gramma doesn't mind driving when a sweet tiny bundle of noodles is awaiting hugs and kisses. Welcome Tavi!

Daytime fatigue: "I'm always dragging..." Another symptom of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) characterized by a collapsing airway, is daytime fatigue. Fragmented sleep happens internally when the brain is aroused from a lack of oxygenation from a restricted collapsing airway at night These arousals cause an increase in pulse and hormone dumping in the body. Your body is working for your next breath! If this happens all night long while you "sleep" you wake up in the morning unrefreshed and this fatigue continues throughout the day affecting your performance, memory, and motivation.

NOT SLEEP APNEA... Waking up refreshed and ready to roll is a sure sign of a good night's sleep. If you wake up wondering if you ever slept at all you may be suffering from a sleep breathing disorder called UARS: Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. This is NOT obstructive Sleep Apnea but rather a collapsing of a "loose" airway that triggers the brain that not enough oxygen is passing through. The brain in turn alerts the body by increasing the heart rate in an attempt to restore oxygen levels. While you are sleeping, your body is NOT. This "waking up of your internal regulatory system" goes all night long and you wake up TIRED! This condition is seen in particular with lean women and athletes whose rigorous daily routines oxygenate and rejuvenate the nighttime losses. Check back for more updates on UARS and possible solutions.

Where does your tongue reside? Did you know that humans are the only mammals on the face of the earth, with the exception of the bulldog, that have a direct connection of their pharynx (airway) and their oral cavity. In addition, our tongues share space with the airway. Airways should be the size of a garden hose allowing good oxygenation to the body. If your tongue sits back in your mouth it squeezes that garden hose, sometimes as small as a cocktail straw! As you sit here reading this, where is your tongue sitting? The normal healthy posture of the tongue is in the roof of the mouth and this keeps it forward and up and out of the airway. Practice that...all day long... 24/7 and the brain will start to learn that position. At night it will remember and you will sleep better. Our brains are retrainable!

Many children suffer from sleep related disorders that show themselves during the day as ADHD, hyperactivity, fatigue, and lethargy.Watch your child sleep, do they: 1-Drool 2-sleep with their mouth open 3-grind their teeth 4-snore... These are serious signs that not enough oxygen is being transferred to the brain. See more
