LATTC ASO 08.10.2020

It is an amazing outreach to our community. If you recall, a few months ago we launched our ALAS program, which brings adult immigrant students to take courses designed to helped them build English language acquisition but to place them on a career pathway in areas like transportation and fashion. They have worked hard in this cohort, to become part of the college fabric. And last night, the ALAS fashion students with the help of LATTC instructor Carlos Alcala, held a runway fashion show! It was a great display of creativity and a sense of pride. These students are excited to be here and we are excited to have them.

Last Thursday, the Mayor’s Office of Reentry held its Fair Chance Celebration and Job Fair on campus. This celebration honored those formerly incarcerated students who attended the Job Preparation Academy at our CRCD Work Source Center, learning job skills, building resumes, preparing for interviews and dressing for success. After the celebration, they were sent over to the North Tent where the Fair Chance Job Fair was set up. We had 50 employers handling interviews and hiring some of these students on the spot. Trade Tech played a major role in giving these young men an opportunity to work. Everyone should be proud.

It is steeped in tradition. A pinning ceremony is a symbolic welcoming of newly graduated nurses into the nursing profession. The new nurses are presented with nursing pins. Our pinning ceremony took place in the South Tent last night. Our nursing program at LATTC has been among the most respected among community colleges. We congratulate the nursing students for their hard work this year.

It is a partnership borne out of a need to support those looking for a second chance. Scott Budnick brought the Anti-Recidivism Boot Camp to LATTC, because we could provide top-notch training in the construction trades. We along with the CRCD Work Source Center, the LA County Federation of Labor and the LA/OC Building Trades put together this program for the formerly incarcerated where they attend boot camp and classes, receive training and then move into the ranks of union workers. Today these young men graduated from their boot camp and are headed to work. LA County supervisor Hilda Solis led an inspiring ceremony, talking about the success that is taking place here at Trade Tech. Rusty Hicks from the County Fed also congratulated the graduates along with Chris Hanna from the Building Trades.

There isn’t an official culinary arts/professional baking graduation, but every year these students like to get together at the end of the semester and celebrate another year of serving this campus. This semester they gathered at the K-Mall stairs to wish each other well, and to thank each other for what has been a tremendous year of work. Two longtime members of the culinary arts faculty also are retiring and students wanted to say their goodbyes. Chef Eddie Sims and Chef Don Warriner are heading off to retirement and will no doubt be in a kitchen somewhere remembering the great times and great students at Trade Tech. We wish them well.

LATTC ASO 03.07.2020

We held the EOPS Honors Ceremony today in AH101. The program honored those in the program who are graduating or transferring after this semester. For many, this college experience has changed their lives and this program has been the catalyst in completing that education. We congratulate all students in the EOPS program, and for those moving on, we wish them the very best. The program featured two LATTC alums who have been successful in their careers. Both encouraged students to take on whatever they want to do.

The Child Development Center held its graduation with all of the children dressing up in their caps and gowns. It’s always so cute! One great side note, CDC director La Tanga Hardy says that UCLA grad students do a study of each of the nine child development centers on the LACCD campuses. Guess who finished number one for their work? That’s right LATTC. Congrats La Tanga, her faculty and her entire team.

The Center for Advanced Transition Skills is an LAUSD program designed to guide certain students into a college environment and to provide them with a pathway to higher learning. Here at Trade Tech, Brenda Smith has done some incredible work with the transitional students and has created a vibrant program with many students who have secured degrees at LATTC and other colleges. There are six CATS programs at various LACCD colleges and today they held their culmination ceremony at Trade Tech. We will miss you, but please come back and visit.

LATTC partnered with Office Depot in putting together a pretty cool Educational Tech Expo in Magnolia Hall’s atrium. There were about ten or so educational technology demonstrations going on, giving faculty, staff and students and great hands-on look at some of things being employed on college campuses. There were 3-D printing systems and some very high tech visual monitors along with digital design software. All of the demos were engaging and useful. There were even some giveaways and raffles along with food provided by culinary arts. All in all a great experience for the attendees. Congrats to VP Mary Gallagher and her team along with Office Depot, for setting up this expo.

t’s hard to believe that the Dancing With the Foster Care Stars event celebrated its fifth year this year! And of course the event has grown to be bigger and better than ever. Dr. Dione Washington and her team put together last week’s event at Steven’s Steakhouse and it was a packed house in support of our foster students. The theme was the Roaring 20’s. There were plenty of milestones being marked this year, including the fifth year of the event. It is also the tenth year fo...r the LATTC Guardian Scholars, one of the most important programs we have on campus. Also I must mention that the real driving force behind our Foster and Kinship Care Program is Dr. Dione Washington. This is her platinum anniversary in the field of foster care, 20 years of service to young people in this area, 17 of those years right here at Trade Tech. Please join me in thanking her for outstanding contributions to this program as well as generations of young people and families. (Also, a very special thank you to Ms. Young for providing the hair stylists, to Ms. Ley for providing make-up artists and to Mr. Robinson for coordinating and overseeing all beauty services for the 5th year!

The annual Tools for the Trades Dinner was a wonderful success last night! The student winners were overwhelmed seeing their tools laid out in impressive fashion as they joined with faculty, staff, friends and family in celebrating their scholarship. Congratulations to all of the students who were honored, and we hope these tools help build your future.

The inaugural Inter Club Council banquet and awards ceremony was a tremendous success, and focused on students who are truly engaged at this college. This year for the first time in recent history, the ASO recognized more than 30 clubs on campus, and all of those clubs were honored yesterday for developing school spirit, supporting student success and making a difference in our communities. The ICC gave certificates to individual club members and also honored several of the c...lubs. The highlight of the event was the naming of the Club of the Year. The excitement built as John Noyola named the 2017 Club of the Year. The honor went to the Baking and Culinary Arts Club. Club president Mary Montgomery accepted on behalf of her group, which has supported dozens of events and outreach throughout the entire year. Congratulations to this club and all clubs for a truly historic year! See more
