That’s the beautiful part. You share your heart and people come alongside you and make it happen. It’s not just a one-woman show; it’s a community show. Felic...idades to Fresno State #perrochato Lisa Casarez Msw (Classes of 1994 and 2001) who will be honored tonight along with 15 other honorees at the Fresno State Alumni Association's #TopDog2021 ceremony airing on ABC30 at 7 p.m. Lisa, founder and executive director/CEO of the Angels of Grace Foster Family Agency is a longtime supporter of our Chicano Alumni Club. She will receive the 2021 Outstanding Alumna Award for the College of Health and Human Services at Fresno State. CÉSAR E. CHÁVEZ DAY OF SERVICE On National César E. Chávez Day, we observe Fresno State’s connection to The White House: the bust of the UFW co-founder -- who...se birthday is today -- that now sits in the Oval Office. Cast from the same model as the statue located in the Fresno State Peace Garden, it's one of 25 busts that were made by artist Paul A. Suarez when the University's statue was commissioned. Suarez is a native of Hanford who now resides with his family in Tennessee. Fresno State was the first university to celebrate Cesar’s life with the first life-size monument in the country and on university grounds, dedicated in 1996. The 9-foot-high bronze sculpture sits as the east anchor to the four monuments now standing in the Peace Garden -- across from the Mahatma Gandhi monument, which was the first monument erected there. On the north side of the garden is the monument to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and on the south side stands a statue in tribute to Jane Addams. Every year at the Chávez Monument, we have enjoyed the garlanding ceremony and festive celebration featuring a guest speaker from the Chávez family, the Chávez Foundation or the UFW with Los Danzantes de Aztlan, California State University, Fresno and the Fresno State Mariachi. For the past two COVID-era celebrations, the celebration has been virtual including the 25th anniversary event last week featuring grandson Andres Chavez. Andres recounted how, on Inauguration Day Jan. 20, his family witnessed the bust behind President Biden’s desk in the Oval Office and the joy that this gesture was a recognition of the contributions campesinos have made to this country, just as the Fresno State monument has inspired students, faculty and staff the past 25 years. #SiSePuede #ArribaYAdelante Chicano Alumni Board of Directors: Manuel Olgin, Angie Iribe, Rima Maldonado, Amy Sepulveda, Josie Rangel, Estella F. Our hearts are heavy as we think of the shooting victims in Atlanta and our Asian communities all over the world who face unjust violence, racism and hatred. W...e've compiled a list of resources on our website that address advocacy against anti-Asian violence, and are committed to growing this list in the weeks ahead for our campus community. In addition, please also visit bit.ly/38Tzcff for an extensive list of resources, education guides, mental health services, advocacy items and ways to support our AAPI community organizers. Together, we can let solidarity lead the way.
