When we read or hear that electrifying speech from Washington, it seems that 1963 was ages ago. But you just need to see our current reality and juxtapose those words to realize that the struggle for equality and freedom in the United States is far from over. "I dream that one day this nation will rise and live the true meaning of its creed," said King. "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

Join SEIU members and community members this important Saturday as we talk to voters across the country to ensure we get Joe Biden and Kamala Harris elected in November. We will make calls to Spanish and English speaking voters. To RSVP please go to the following link in order to receive the link for the phone bank: http://www.mobilize.us/seiu/event/323756/ Every vote counts and every call made brings us closer to victory in November. In this virtual event we will provide a... phone bank training and then we'll start making calls! We will have a facilitator to answer any questions for the duration of the phone bank. Don't allow yourself to sit there on election night or the day after wondering if you did all you could to bring change....act now. Just to go the link above and make sure we are all holding ourselves accountable to voting and encouraging others to do the same.

As brothers in the struggle for equality, I extend the hand of fellowship and goodwill and wish you and your members continued success. Our separate struggles are really a struggle for freedom, dignity, and humanity, Dr. King wrote in a telegram to civil rights activist Cesar Chavez in 1966.

In news from Honduras, the Indigenous environmental activist Félix Vásquez was assassinated Saturday by armed, masked men in front of his family. Vásquez was a member of the Indigenous Lenca community and was planning to run for Congress in 2021. His killing comes four-and-a-half years after the assassination of Berta Cáceres, who was also a Lenca leader.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis said in his six-page ruling that he was fully reinstating the DACA program based on the terms established under former President Barack Obama's administration. Trump tried to end the program in September 2017, and this past July Chad Wolf, the acting secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, suspended DACA pending a comprehensive review. However, Garaufis also ruled in November that Wolf has not been acting lawfully as the chief of Homeland Security and that, as such, his suspension of protections for a class of migrants brought to the United States illegally as children is invalid.

"I speak to kids all the time and I tell them that the most important role in their life is being not a citizen with a capital 'C,' a citizen of a country, but being a citizen with a small 'C,' a citizen of your community. That's the most important role you can play in life."

This morning, start with John Lewis' final message to the country: "Like so many young people today, I was searching for a way out, or some might say a way in, and then I heard the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on an old radio. He was talking about the philosophy and discipline of nonviolence. He said we are all complicit when we tolerate injustice. He said it is not enough to say it will get better by and by. He said each of us has a moral obligation to stand up, spea...k up and speak out. When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself. Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble." Let's get into some good trouble folks!

With the pandemic being an ongoing crisis, it's hard wrapping our heads around trying to have a secure financial future. However, the NextGen committee feels that right now is the perfect time to start thinking about our financial future. Bobby Roy Guleng and NextGen Committee member Jacquie Martin will be presenting a Zoom course on Financial Wellness where they will be going over budgeting, planning for retirement, working towards our dreams and goals, and building a financial legacy to name a few topics.
