We're open today, Black Friday! Break the waste cycle and give some awesome goods a Last Chance! For #fixitupfriday this week we're sharing an upcycle/DIY from one of our regulars. They wrapped two secondhand lampshades in embroidery floss to create this funky light fixture. Lots of possibilities with this idea!

To qualify for the statewide ballot, the groundbreaking California Recycling and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act needs more signatures. Since signature gatherers have been pulled off of the streets due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we ask that you take the time to print, follow directions to fill out the paper petition for you and up to three other registered voters in your county, sign and mail in your signatures by this Friday, June 26. Download the petition and instructions at... https://camustlead.org/plasticsfreeca The California Recycling and Plastic Pollution Act would reduce the amount of single-use plastic sold in CA by at least 25% by 2030, ensure remaining plastic is truly recyclable, compostable or reusable, and raise fees from plastic producers to fund the state’s recycling infrastructure, as well as restore natural environments negatively impacted by plastic pollution.

MRWMD's popular Last Chance Mercantile re-use store will remain closed until further notice due to budgetary constraints. Last Chance Mercantile is a beloved institution and key to the District’s mission of turning waste into resources by fulfilling one of the seven R’s of sustainabilityreuse. Unfortunately, the store has historically operated at a loss, a situation unlikely to change under current conditions of heightened health safety. Thus, the store will remain closed ...while the District reassesses the best path forward. The closure includes donations of reusable goods. Household hazardous waste, electronic waste and other materials are still being accepted onsite. MRWMD Board of Directors and staff will examine possible paths forward to an eventual reopening of the Last Chance Mercantile with the store operating more economically, while fulfilling the District’s mission. Thank you to all our customers for your support! Read the full press release: https://www.mrwmd.org//last-chance-mercantile-remain-clo/

Recently, the State and County of Monterey have allowed retail businesses to reopen with restrictions. The District is currently evaluating safety measures that would be required for reopening the Last Chance Mercantile, for both customers and workers, as well as the financial viability of the store. We will provide updates on reopening of the store as they become available. Thank you for your patience.

A number of customers have asked when the Last Chance Mercantile (LCM) will reopen. Under the current Shelter in Place (SIP) order issued by Monterey County, the LCM cannot open for sales or donations. We will continue to assess the SIP orders (County & State) to see when we can resume any kind of operations. Thank you again for your interest. We look forward to the return of our LCM customers as soon as it is safely possible.
