Defenseman is probably the right position for you if you’re nickname was Big Bird. That was Larry Robinson, former Canadiens and Kings Defenseman, and the foc...us of this week’s #RaftersRewind. The 6’4/225lb Winchester, Ontario native was an intimidating presence on the blueline, but was also very mobile and covered a wide range. From his first shift until his final days as a member of the Kings, the ten time All-Star delivered convincing hits while being a major contributor in both ends of the rink. His rookie season ended with Montreal winning the Stanley Cup, but it was in his third season in the league when Robinson’s offensive abilities began to grow, registering 61 points in 81 games. The Canadiens dynasty began with raising the Cup again in the 1976, but the 1976-77 season was the hallmark season of Robinson’s career 19 goals, 66 assists (85 points), and a plus/minus of +120 all resulting in him finishing on the All NHL First Team and winning the Norris Trophy. The Canadiens won the Stanley Cup two more times to close out the 70s, and Robinson finished on either the All First (1979, 1980) or the All Second (1978, 1981) Team over the next few seasons. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in the Habs 1978 championship run, and added another Norris Trophy to his mantle in 1980. He also had the respect of even the toughest guys in the league. According to former teammate and Hall of Fame Goaltender Ken Dryden, his presence commanded the respect of even the Big Bad Bruins and the Broad Street Bullies. "Each time we played them, I knew that an outraged Fred Shero or Don Cherry would send out players to hunt him, to hammer him into the boards with elbows and sticks, to fight with him if he would let them until, bruised and sweating, his mystique could only come crashing down. But they never did." By the time the 1985-86 season rolled around, Robinson was still one of the best blueliners in the league, but was also one of the more experienced members of a squad back in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in seven seasons. His 82 points were good enough to finish on the All-Second Team, and Big Bird won his sixth and final Stanley Cup as a player. He spent one more season in Montreal before closing out his 20 season career with the Kings. Even with the rich history that the Canadiens have, Robinson still ranks second in games played (1,202 in 17 seasons), fourth in assists (697), fifth in points (883), and is at the top of the franchise plus/minus list (+692, +722 for his career is the most in NHL history). He’d win four more Stanley Cups as a coach or scout, including the 2000 Stanley Cup as the New Jersey Devils interim coach (the first ever to win with an interim label). He was inducted in to the Hall of Fame in 1995, and had his #19 retired by the Canadiens in 2007. He was named one of the 100 Greatest Players in NHL history in 2017.
