We are deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of Deputy Pedro "Pete" Romo. The 26-year LASD veteran passed yesterday due to COVID-19 related medical complications and, as you can imagine, his family is in shock and heartbroken. Pete was a stellar husband, father, partner and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Hearts are very heavy as the many friends and loved ones of Sergeant Armando Meneses mourn his passing. He was a PPOA member w/ nearly a quarter century of dedicated public service and will be dearly missed. A number of district attorneys throughout California are openly sparring with reformer colleagues in a power struggle that could shape criminal justice here and in other states.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of #LASD Sergeant Jamie Arakawa. His dedicated public service to both this nation in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and to the residents of Los Angeles County as a 25-year LASD veteran will never be forgotten. A judge ruled mostly in favor of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys for LA County in a petition brought against D.A. George Gascon, saying he cannot order his prosecutors to ignore laws that the union says protect the public, including three-strike allegations and sentencing enhancements.

State legislator Richard Bloom has announced he will run to succeed LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who has decided she will not seek a third term. Bloom is a former Santa Monica Mayor and longtime resident of the Third Supervisorial District.

PPOA board of directors monthly meeting/teleconference in progress all day. Collectively, the current PPOA board brings approximately 300 years of county service to the table.

The Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner explained the steps taken in preparation of a potential overwhelmed mortuary system: "Early on in the pandemic, the DMEC took steps and developed plans to add to our facility's body storage capacity. Refrigerated storage additions were installed in the beginning of April. During normal operations, DMEC can store up to 500 bodies. With the additions, we can further hold 1500 bodies for a total of 2000."

Four years ago today, Sergeant Al Lopez died in the line of duty. His passing was a heart-wrenching loss for his unit, his department, and most importantly, his family, including Al's wife and two adult children. Please keep the Lopez family in your thoughts and prayers.

PPOA extends our sincere condolences to the family of Riverside County Sheriff's Sergeant Harry Cohen, who suffered a fatal heart attack while training with the K-9 unit on Sunday. Sergeant Cohen was a 24-year department veteran and is survived by his wife, son and daughter. Please keep his family and his many friends on the department in your thoughts and prayers.

END OF WATCH: Oct. 11, 1967 On this date in 1967, Deputy James Waygood lost his life as a result of an on-duty incident. Deputy Waygood was a PPOA member when he was killed in a traffic accident while he was a passenger in a radio car responding to a call for assistance. A drunk driver ran a red light and collided with the radio car. The drunk driver was also killed, however, the deputy driving the radio car survived. PPOA salutes Deputy Waygood for his service and sacrifice and we ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers on this end-of-watch anniversary date.

Congratulations to Deputy Robert Jimenez, who graduated with #LASD Academy class 452 last night! Deputy Jimenez is a former Sheriff's Security Officer (he was honor recruit in SSO class 53) and his extremely proud father is Security Officer/PPOA Delegate Henry Jimenez. Thank you, Deputy Jimenez, for your dedication!

Today marks a solemn anniversary for the family and friends of fallen LASD Sergeant Steve Owen. The 29-year department veteran was killed in the line of duty on October 5, 2016. His death was a staggering loss for the Owen family, the Sheriff’s Department and the communities he served, both on and off duty. We ask that you keep Steve's loved ones in your thoughts and prayers throughout the day.

Thank you to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban for donating $50,000 to each of the families of the deputies wounded in the ambush shooting last month. Cuban said he made the donation as part of his efforts with his Fallen Patriot Fund, originally founded to help families of U.S. military members.
