We are deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of Deputy Pedro "Pete" Romo. The 26-year LASD veteran passed yesterday due to COVID-19 related medical complications and, as you can imagine, his family is in shock and heartbroken. Pete was a stellar husband, father, partner and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A judge ruled mostly in favor of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys for LA County in a petition brought against D.A. George Gascon, saying he cannot order his prosecutors to ignore laws that the union says protect the public, including three-strike allegations and sentencing enhancements.

The Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner explained the steps taken in preparation of a potential overwhelmed mortuary system: "Early on in the pandemic, the DMEC took steps and developed plans to add to our facility's body storage capacity. Refrigerated storage additions were installed in the beginning of April. During normal operations, DMEC can store up to 500 bodies. With the additions, we can further hold 1500 bodies for a total of 2000."

END OF WATCH: Oct. 11, 1967 On this date in 1967, Deputy James Waygood lost his life as a result of an on-duty incident. Deputy Waygood was a PPOA member when he was killed in a traffic accident while he was a passenger in a radio car responding to a call for assistance. A drunk driver ran a red light and collided with the radio car. The drunk driver was also killed, however, the deputy driving the radio car survived. PPOA salutes Deputy Waygood for his service and sacrifice and we ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers on this end-of-watch anniversary date.

Today marks a solemn anniversary for the family and friends of fallen LASD Sergeant Steve Owen. The 29-year department veteran was killed in the line of duty on October 5, 2016. His death was a staggering loss for the Owen family, the Sheriff’s Department and the communities he served, both on and off duty. We ask that you keep Steve's loved ones in your thoughts and prayers throughout the day.

Thank you to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban for donating $50,000 to each of the families of the deputies wounded in the ambush shooting last month. Cuban said he made the donation as part of his efforts with his Fallen Patriot Fund, originally founded to help families of U.S. military members.
