Can a child get cavities treated without getting a shot? When a child has cavities that need to be filled, the first thing parents worry about is what kind of experience their child will have with the shot. Most parents feel nervous and hold the child's hand and hope that he or she doesn't cry after the poke. Once the child goes through the numbing process, I see parents sigh and sit down. Wand is a new technology that a dentist can use to make the tooth numb without an ac...tual poke. We deliver the anesthetic around the gums, and the Wand only numbs the tooth we work on and not the lips or cheeks. Therefore, children don't bite their lips or cheeks afterwards. It is less invasive, and I end up using less anesthetic, which is better for a child's body anyway. It also allows the dentist to be able to work on multiple teeth in one visit, and getting both sides of the mouth numb is not a problem. With a traditional injection, most dentist don't recommend getting both left and right side of the mouth numb, because it is very difficult to eat that night, but with the Wand, it is not a problem at all. When my daughter was 4 years old, I found two cavities that needed to be filled. When I gave her an injection to numb the area, she did not like the numb feeling of her face and did not want to continue. Even with the topical gel, a lot of kids dislike the poking and just dread the idea of needle. But in my daughter's case, she got through the shot process just fine but still did not like the numb sensation and did not want to go through a dental treatment that day. Then, I decided to bring her back on another day, and I tried the Wand. And a career-changing moment occurred. At that time, I had just learned how to use the Wand but did not believe that this technology would make a difference in my practice or a child's experience by much. But this time, she sat through the entire procedure without a problem and actually enjoyed watching the movie and relaxed in chair. She enjoyed that experience and told me she wanted to do it again! Then I realized technology can help bring a better experience. As a mother, I learned to be patient and explain the dental experience to the child every step of the way. I use many guidance techniques I learned in my Child Psychology courses, but never did I think that technology would make the experience easier for my young patients. Ask Dr. Lim about the Wand, and it will make everyone's experience ten times better in dental chair!
