Join us Thursday, November 12, as Jill Stewart interviews Tim DeRoche and Gloria Romero about their new book, A Fine Line: How Most American Kids Are Kept Out of the Best Public Schools. Special guest Nick Melvoin is a board member for District 4 of Los Angeles Unified School District. WHEN: Thursday, November 12 at 4:30 pm WHERE: Zoom... GET THE BOOK: https://www.amazon.com/A-Fine-Line-Tim-DeRoche/dp/0999277626 REGISTER HERE: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MvbDnOwfSYKENq-DTriReg COST: None ABOUT THE BOOK: A Fine Line takes a close look at attendance zones, the boundary lines drawn by school district officials governing who gets into the best public schools and who is kept out. DeRoche shows how these boundary lines echo the racist redlining practices of the early 20th Century and how they contribute to the stark inequalities of our public education system. Illuminating. A must-read for education leaders, policy makers, parents, and anyone who believes that a child’s zip code should not prevent him or her from accessing the best education that a school district offers. Tony Miller, former Deputy Secretary of Education under President Obama. ABOUT TIM DEROCHE: Tim DeRoche is a consultant and writer based in Los Angeles. For 20 years, he has worked with clients in K-12 education, serving public-school districts, charter school networks, and curriculum developers. He has written about education policy for Education Next, Education Week, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Business Journal and Quillette. His first book, The Ballad of Huck & Miguel a retelling of Huck Finn set on the L.A. River was an Amazon bestseller featured on CBS Sunday Morning. ABOUT GLORIA ROMERO: Retired Senator Gloria Romero was the first woman to serve as the Majority Leader of the California State Senate. Representing East Los Angeles and eastern Los Angeles County in the 24th State Senate District, Sen. Romero served as Senate Democratic Caucus Chair and Chair of the Senate Education Committee. ABOUT NICK MELVOIN: Nick Melvoin represents District 4 on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Nick began his career as an English teacher at Markham Middle School, an LAUSD campus in Watts. He holds a BA from Harvard University, a Master's Degree in Urban Education from LMU, and a law degree from NYU. ABOUT JILL STEWART: Jill Stewart is former managing editor of LA Weekly and former executive director of Coalition to Preserve LA. She is an experienced broadcast commentator, having appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, KPCC, KCRW and BBC Radio. For seven years, she was a reporter at the L.A. Times. APPLY for the LosAngeles PressClub FOOT IN THE DOOR Fellowship: About the Fellowship Everyone needs someone to open a door for them when they’re starting out in journalism. Too many talented young reporters from communities historically excluded from the media might never get their foot in the door with a reputable journalism opportunity because they came up in worlds where the people who know and respect them are outside of journalism.... The LA Press Club wants to change that. Each year five talented recent journalism college grads will be paired with a veteran in the field to actively work on securing a valuable work opportunity. More than a mentoring relationship, this will be a direct partnership between the fellow and the journalism veteran to figure out how to launch career dreams and take concrete steps together to get there. https://lapressclub.org/about/foot-in-the-door-fellowship/ Who Can Apply This fellowship is open to any young journalist looking to move to their next big opportunity. You might be a senior in college studying journalism, a recent grad, or you might be in an entry-level position or internship at a media company. If you have been in journalism for less than five years, you should apply! Application Timeline * November 23, 2020 Deadline * December 18, 2020 Fellows Announced * January 2020 Fellowship Begins * June 2020 Fellowship Culminates APPLY https://lapressclub.wufoo.com/forms/s1hqwkoa0ye1geb/
