On average, we are still losing 10 of our residents each day to COVID-19. The 3 vaccines we now have would prevent just about everyone vaccinated from getting infected, being hospitalized, and dying. It's your turn now! Appointments are available at VaccinateLACounty.com

We AskedYou AnsweredAnd This is What You Had to Say After a year like no other, we wanted to give every client and family served by Lanterman Regional Center an opportunity to provide the Center with feedback on how we’re doing and how things are going. We invited the 11,000 clients and families we serve to participate in a mail-in survey sent out in their primary language to evaluate our performance and processes, and received an above average response, hearing back from 2...0 percent or more of you in each of the four languages English, Spanish, Korean or Chinese. So, what did you have to say? Overall, 93% of clients and families reported that they were satisfied or extremely satisfied with the services and support that Lanterman provides. And then we broke it down into 10 different aspects of service and support for which responses were given along a 5-point scale: - Extremely Satisfied - Satisfied - Not sure - Dissatisfied - Extremely Dissatisfied We asked survey recipients questions in the following 10 areas and we’re sharing the percentage satisfied/extremely satisfied: 1. Easy to reach by telephone 87% 2. Timely response to concerns as needed 90% 3. Respectful/professional staff communication 97% 4. Staff respect and honor my race/ethnic culture 96% 5. I feel listened to/understood by staff 94 % 6. Staff partner with helpful solution-based ideas 91% 7. Service coordinator knows and informs me about relevant services and supports 90% 8. Feel comfortable as active participant in IPP/IFSP 92% 9. I receive the services and supports I need 91% 10. The services and supports I receive have made a difference 93% In 9 out of the 10 areas, 90 percent or more were satisfied or extremely satisfied. Our lowest mark at 87 percent satisfied/extremely satisfied was how easy, or perhaps not easy, we are to reach by telephone. Overall percent satisfaction by ethnicity was also over 90% among 7 self-identified ethnicities. While there is a small percentage that is unsure, dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied, in each of these areas, overall it was reaffirming after this extraordinary year to hear back from our community that we’re mostly meeting or exceeding your expectations. Also, respondents who had expressed a question or concern in their survey response, and chose to provide contact information, received a follow-up phone call. The takeaway is there is always room for improvement. And your feedback will help us deliver an ever-better experience with the regional center to our clients and families.

Yesterday was ARCA - Association of Regional Center Agencies's Grassroots Day and all 21 regional centers participated virtually this year. This year's Lanterman team included: - Joe Perales, KYRC family support specialist - Evie Jung, KYRC family support specialist... - Poulette Minasyan, service coordinator - Taleen Katchatourian, parent - Kimberly Issac, service provider - Sam Daley, client Members of the Lanterman team met with: - Bethany Renfree representing State Senator Maria Elena Durazo - Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo - Assemblymember Richard Bloom - Assemblymember Laura Friedman - Yesenia Jimenez representing Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. Advocacy focused on the following points: - Service coordination and caseloads ARCA and SEIU-California are jointly requesting $55.0M (General Fund; $83.3M Total Fund) to meet statutory caseload requirements and the ability to better meet the needs of the individuals and families whom we serve. - AB 445 (Calderon) ARCA is sponsoring AB 445, which would get rid of an old law that makes regional centers collect certain information from the parents of individuals getting regional center services. This is a barrier to service. - Lessons From The Pandemic Throughout the pandemic, ARCA has appreciated the state’s commitment to flexible service delivery and the removal of barriers to meeting new and existing needs. Done through directives from the Department of Developmental Services, this ensured services could remain flexible and dynamic. Going forward, this person-centered flexibility should remain, and barriers like the Annual Family Program Fee and Family Cost Participation Program should be removed. - Uniform Holiday Schedule and provider rate sunsets The Governor’s Budget continues to propose a delay to the Uniform Holiday Schedule and again extends recent service provider rate increases. Both of these outcomes are good, but should be made permanent. - Better minimum wage rate adjustments Our system and the providers who help make its promises into reality deserve a more effective and efficient way to meet salary costs for their professional staff.

Gillian is a seven-year-old girl who cannot sit still in school. She continually gets up, gets distracted, flies with thoughts, and doesn't follow lessons. Her... teachers worry about her, punish her, scold her, reward the few times that she is attentive, but nothing. Gillian does not know how to sit and cannot be attentive. When she comes home, her mother punishes her too. So not only does have bad grades and punishment at school, but she also suffers from them at home. One day, Gillian's mother is called to school. The lady, sad as someone waiting for bad news, takes her hand and goes to the interview room. The teachers speak of illness, of an obvious disorder. Maybe it's hyperactivity or maybe she needs a medication. During the interview another teacher arrives who knows the little girl. He asks all the adults, mother and colleagues, to follow him into an adjoining room from where she can still be seen. As he leaves, he tells Gillian that they will be back soon and turns on an old radio with music. As the girl is alone in the room, she immediately gets up and begins to move up and down chasing the music in the air with her feet and her heart. The teacher smiles as the colleagues and the mother look at him between confusion and compassion, as is often done with the old. So he says: "See? Gillian is not sick, Gillian is a dancer!" He recommends that her mother take her to a dance class and that her colleagues make her dance from time to time. She attends her first lesson and when she gets home she tells her mother: "Everyone is like me, no one can sit there!" In 1981, after a career as a dancer, opening her own dance academy and receiving international recognition for her art, Gillian Lynne became the choreographer of the musical "Cats." Hopefully all different children find adults capable of welcoming them for who they are and not for what they lack. Long live the differences, the little black sheep and the misunderstood. They are the ones who create beauty in this world.
