Today the propeller from USS Canberra (CA-70) returned to the entrance of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum . The prop was removed last year to accommodate construction of the "Town Square" and today was back on display as it has been since 1980. Canberra served in World War II and Vietnam, and was scrapped on Terminal Island, in the Port of Los Angeles

72 years ago today...it snowed in San Pedro! But not even this historic precipitation could stop the ferry Islander from its usual cross-channel schedule. The ferry terminal in the center of the photograph is now the home of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.

To some, hardtack may only be flour and water . But sailor William O’Connell used it to say Happy New Year to his wife Kathleen while he was away serving on the USS New York (ACR-2) during the SpanishAmerican War. He mailed it home from Santiago, Puerto Rico in January 1898. Happy New Year 2021 !!!

On this day in 1915 the US Navy established a new submarine base in Groton, Connecticut. What was the location of the west coast submarine base? If you guessed Port of Los Angeles you are correct! The base operated in San Pedro at berths 57-60 from 1917 until the mid 1920s. (photo from the Museum's collection).

With all of the excitement around the replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge, we start off the week taking a look back at other famous bridges in the LA / Long Beach port complex.
