Yesterday LSFD stopped by Butteville Elementary to talk to the kids about fire safety, and to show them some of the tools we use on calls. The kids always love check out everything that we have on the engine!
LSFD wants to send our deepest condolences to the Sisk family. Morgan Sisk was a former firefighter for LSFD, and involved in several other Siskiyou agencies as well. A special thank you to Jasen Vela for reaching out to our local departments. LSFD will be sending an engine on April 17th to honor Morgan.
We were in for a surprise when this engine stopped by for LSFD’s training last night. The engineer even took the time to show Captain Williams how the engine works. We see a future leader and firefighter in the making. Should we get him some turnout gear?
Today is a burn day, and the Lake Shastina Golf Course is making the most of it! Thank you to all concerned callers-if you are seeing smoke coming from the golf course area today, it is a controlled burn. The golf course always does a great job of giving LSFD the heads up when they are burning.
Last night LSFD trained on the propane tank prop. Teams of two worked to advance a line to the prop. While one firefighter used a fog pattern to push back the flames, the other firefighter reached forward to shut off the tanks. Teamwork is always key when advancing on live fire.
Today at 2:27pm the sleepers of Lake Shastina Fire held a moment of silence for former LSFD sleeper Sam Chase. Sam passed away in 2020, and today, 2/27, is Sam’s birthday. In honor of Sam, his family, and the @samchasefoundation , we added these stickers to a helmet that will hang in the station, for the sleepers of the past and the sleepers to come to carry out Sam’s memory. Happy birthday Sam. ... You are remembered. See more
For the past two weeks LSFD has been working on vehicle extrication training. Many techniques were covered, including rolling the dash, vehicle anchoring, patient stabilization, how and where to make cuts, and hands-on practice using the cutters, jaws of life, and ram. These skills are extremely valuable if we ever need to get a trapped patient out of a vehicle, and it’s always a fun training when you get to turn a car into a convertible.
The LSPOA did a great job plowing the roads, but we still encourage everyone to leave early, drive slow, and drive safe on this snow day. Even though there are blue skies out, the winter storm warning is still in affect through this week and will bring more snow and wind. #lsfd #lakeshastinafire #snowday #snow #winterishere #winterstormwatch #firefighters #firefighting #chief_miller
LSFD wants to thank everyone who came out to see Santa on his ride around Lake Shastina last night. It’s always fun to share this tradition with the community, and to spread some much needed holiday cheer. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays, from LSFD to you!
Don’t forget Santa will be touring the Lake Shastina community tonight on the fire engine. If you hear sirens and see lights, come out and wave hello. You can also drop your wish list in a box on the engine for Santa to read. Santa will be passing out sealed treat bags for the children. The sleigh will start around 5pm. Here is a link to the route: https://lakeshastinafire.com/news-events/santas-sleigh ... If you don’t see your road on the route, there is a lot of parking at Hoy Park for those who still want to see Santa-the engine will be sure to pass by the park slowly!
Lake Shastina Fire will be continuing the tradition of Santa’s Sleigh this year, with Santa riding on the engine to visit all the children of Lake Shastina. This will happen for one night, December 23rd, starting at 5:00pm. To maintain social distancing Santa will be staying on the engine, but there will be a box on the back of the engine where kids can drop their wishlists off. Santa will read them all at the end of the night! The sleigh route will be posted this week on lakeshastinafire.com
We’re happy to see snow back on our mountains. After a long summer and with the recent colder weather, we’ve moved the arrow out of extreme fire danger. Even with temperatures dropping LSFD would like to remind those to still be actively fire safe, check on burn days, and be attentive to burning in your wood stoves.
The K-12 can’t be stopped. This week LSFD got to use the saw to cut open a vault door. Cutting from top to bottom, the door was opened. What was inside? Unfortunately, no treasure. The vault was empty. ... But getting to work with the K-12 is always a firefighter favorite.
Last weekend we got a knock at our door from the Staudinger family, who wanted to give LSFD and LSPD these wooden flags that they handmade for our departments. They told us each member of the family had a part in making them, even the kids! Thank you to the Staudinger family for sharing their art with us-we are proud to serve everyone in our community.
Toys for Tots means a lot to LSFD. All toys donated go to local families in Siskiyou County, so every kid can have a present to unwrap for the holidays. New unopened toys can be donated at the Lake Shastina Fire Station. We’re proud to have a box at the station, and we’d love for you to help us fill the box to the top so Firefighter Maize can’t fit in it!
