The day started heading to Idyllwild for the day but I ran over, who knows what on the freeway wrapped in a blanket and my car started leaking something. (Gonna... get it looked at tomorrow) So we played it safe and turned around in Escondido. Ended up going to Otay Lakes and renting a boat and had a blast. Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. Have you had a chance to search for our Soaring Minds hidden geocache? We added to it today while on a hike at Otay lakes.

What a fun day we had yesterday at Otay lake. We made our very own Soaring Minds geocache and hid it with our initials and some fun trinkets. Your mission should you accept: find this location and add your initials as well as a souvenir to leave behind.

Did some pontoon driving and osprey watching at Otay Lakes today! Finished up the class day with some photography printing.

Students staged their own photographs today at Otay lake! We had a lot of fun playing with perspective.

Another fun weekend

It is stories like this that take me back to an earlier time as a concessionaire at Sutherland. In 2003 when Jim Brown retired I had been honoring a contract wi...th the city to operate the concession for almost 9 years. So I started my city lake experience at around 1994. I got to know Jim Brown and I met a lot of the people in several of the recent stories. Kellen from sdfish and his dad were fishing Sutherland all the time. It was a time when the internet blogs and sdfish were getting going. It was some of the best times. My wife and I enjoyed the lake and would have a lot of family gatherings all year long and cookouts with the bass clubs, and I always had the BBQ ready for anyone coming off the lake. For nine years my wife and I would manage the concession on the weekends for the season and go to Mexico and wait for winter in Jacksonhole to go snow skiing and then back to Sutherland to reopen in February. It was a great time, but boy did I have a lot to learn. I was banned and then reinstated to sdfish I think at least 3 times because of my stance on, "The Big Bass Record Club". Then Mike Long and his fish caught at Sutherland, we all knew it wasn't caught at Sutherland another time I got banned from. sdfish gave me a platform but boy the Mike Long disciples were not having anything to do with what I was saying. I was having fun and sdfish kept reinstating me so it was good. Other things I had to learn made me realize you can't fight city hall. At that time the city attorney wanted to take over the lake concession at Sutherland so he had the city not renew the contracts at all the lakes. I fought hard, even telling the public the city attorney was not telling the truth, with proof to back it up I would be fool to call the attorney a lair. What a waste of time talking to the city council they just sat there eating their lunch while I tried to voice my opinion at city hall. Standing at the counter of the concession you can learn a lot about what people feel about the way things are run. I met so many people that worked for the city and would open up, they would make it known the water department could care less if the lakes were open at all for recreation. People have had to fight hard over the years to just keep the lakes from closing. That brings me to today. Otay was closed today. I have opened that lake every Wednesday for the last 4 years and help as regional manager with 5 other lakes that will close one more day per month. Closing one day a month may seem like nothing but let me remind you that the water department already closes some lakes 4 days a week now and others for months at a time. We need help in getting the city to reconsider the lake closures. Soon, only scoundrels will be fishing the closed lakes if we don't fight city hall now. Thank you Kellen Ellis and Jim Brown, for all the good times, you made the San Diego lakes great.

Chris and Winston caught some nice bluegill this week. With the weather warming up we should start to see a lot of Bluegill. Bring the kids and let's have some fun. The lake is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The city counsel is getting close to a vote for budget cutbacks that the San Diego City Counsel is proposing on the Reservoirs. This is for next year's budget.... The public needs to know the counsel is proposing to have the the lakes closed one extra day per month. We need to contact members of the city counsel or send a letter to the city stating our concerns to the closures. Also through the media and the public need to be aware of what is happening. The passage of this could happen any day unless they get complaints from the public. if you could alert them as to what's being proposed that would be great. It's buried in the budget proposal very hard to find, which could be passed any day now and the public is just not being made aware. Here is a list below. Every lake would be closed 1 extra day a month. 1. Barrett Closed the 1st Wednesday of each month 2 .El Capitan Closed the 1st Friday of each month 3. Miramar Reservoir Closed on 1st Tuesdays of each month 4. Otay Closed on the 2nd Wednesday of each Month 6. Murray Reservoir Closed 2nd Tuesday of each month 7.
