People in Your La Jolla Neighborhood: U.S. Snowboard Team member Judd Henkes looks ahead to new slopes to surmount. The one thing La Jollan Judd Henkes loves the most is the one thing he can’t do here: snowboard. The 19-year-old member of the 2020-21 U.S. Snowboard Team called the La Jolla Light from Mammoth Mountain to talk about snow, training in a pandemic and life on a board. Henkes, who went to Muirlands Middle School and La Jolla High School but graduated from an onli...ne high school to better facilitate his training, said he considers La Jolla his home, despite spending most of his time practicing his snowboarding craft hundreds or thousands of miles away. And he’s not just racing down a mountain on a board; he’s practicing tricks in his preferred method of snowboarding: slopestyle. Business Spotlight: La Jolla’s American Pizza Mfg makes the meal, you do the home cooking. La Jolla resident Andrew Melone thinks he has a recipe for a home-cooked meal that can’t be topped: fresh ingredients artfully assembled and ready to go from American Pizza Mfg., the family-focused pizza and pasta concept he opened in July at 7402 La Jolla Blvd. American Pizza Mfg. (short for manufacturing) is designed around taking food and cooking it at home so you get the hottest, freshest product in your home, Melone said. The company is less a restaurant and more a food prep slash retail concept, he said. American Pizza Mfg. sells pizzas, pastas, salads and desserts that are assembled in the shop and taken home by customers to cook and eat. Opinion / Guest Commentary: There are so many things to miss about going to school. Amaya Bishop, a senior at La Jolla High School, writes an opinion piece and says: "I have mixed feelings about distance learning. I like that I can use my own bathroom, wear sweatpants, eat food from my house and sit barefoot on my couch during my school day. However, that’s about it. I miss school so badly and I don’t like being home this much. I’ve gotten used to dividing up my day because it helps me expend energy and have different chapters in my days." Scripps Research: Fast method of isolating tumor-targeting T cells could propel personalized cancer therapies. When it comes to defeating cancer, some immune cells are mightier than others. But even the best-trained eye and today’s advanced scientific tools have trouble discerning the most powerful tumor-fighting cells from the rest. A new technique developed by scientist Peng Wu (pictured) of Scripps Research in La Jolla aims to change that, offering a new platform that could propel personalized cancer treatments that have been hindered due to the challenges of isolating the most useful immune cells in patients. "Santa will still come to The Village": La Jolla Christmas Parade organizers seek modified holiday festivities. Details are still being finalized as to how the La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival may happen this year amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the tentative plan is to essentially reverse the usual parade pattern: Instead of spectators lining the streets and watching as floats go by, the floats will be stationary and the spectators will drive by. The event, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, and themed Christmas at the Cove, also will feature Santa Claus being transported in the Old Black Goose a 1915 Packard convertible along with performances and a flyover that can be seen across The Village, organizers say.
