I'm thrilled to have my new edition of ICONIC NEW YORK finally in hand! It was printed in Italy during the shutdown, and the whole process was touch-and-go for ...a while, but 3000 books were finally printed, shipped to Germany, then to the warehouse in New York. It's a beautifully produced book by te Neues publishing in Kempen, Germany and is being distributed internationally. It is the most up-to-date book on New York City available. It is available now on Amazon, and will also be available in museums and bookshops soon. 195 pages $45.00 See more

Here's one painting, two versions. The first may be complete, or may not be. The "Four Ballerinas" is oil on wood panel, 20x16 inches. It's to be part of an i...nvitational show of 20 artists, all works wood panel of this size. Desiring something distinctive, I opted for ballet dancers (not dancing) with the strong contrast of white tutus on a dark background. I worked on the figures first with attention to skin tones and hair, then liked it right there. But, as I sometimes do when faced with indecision midway, I took a picture of the painting, made a print on my printer, then painted white tutus right on the paper print, just for the sake a comparison. Still not sure how I'll finish it, or whether it is. Opinions anyone?

Publicity cel, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," 1988, Walt Disney Productions. The Hilbert Museum's newest exhibition -- "Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Original Production... Art from a Groundbreaking Disney Classic" -- opened on March 14, and we SO wish you could be here to see it! The museum is closed now for the duration of the COVID-19 shutdown, and we look forward to having you all here again in the future in happier times. Bill Heeter and Kristi Correa, the lenders of the "Roger Rabbit" exhibition, have graciously agreed to extend the exhibition to make up for the amount of time that we are closed, so you can look forward to the fun of seeing this great show in person sometime in the future. But till then, stay tuned here on our social media, and we'll be sharing new images and stories from our exhibitions every day so you can enjoy highlights from the Hilbert Collection in our "Hilbert Museum at Home" series! "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," which Disney released in 1988, was a seminal movie in the history of animation for a number of reasons: Disney was still producing feature-length animated films at the time, but many of them ("Black Cauldron," for example) had been tepidly received. The huge success of "Roger Rabbit" is credited with kicking off the Disney Renaissance that led to the releases of "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast" and many, many more. It was the first time a major Hollywood director, Robert Zemeckis, had agreed to direct a feature-length cartoon. The execution of combining the live-action characters with the animated ones was remarkable and resulted in a number of technological breakthroughs, especially the use of shading and shade, and the engineering required to coordinate the characters’ interactions. It was the first and only time that characters from all the major animation studios (Warner Bros., Disney, Fleischer Studios, Walter Lantz Productions, King Features, etc.) had appeared in the same cartoon. Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse together? Donald Duck facing off with Daffy Duck? It was shocking! It demonstrated to the studios that audiences would still respond to a cleverly written, well designed, wonderfully drawn and brilliantly directed full-length animated feature. And finally, the film appeals to both adults and children alike -- and today it is still a staple of viewing for all ages on Disney+ and other outlets. If you're looking for a great movie to catch up on or re-visit during this time of hunkering down at home, why not give "Roger Rabbit" a viewing? (It's a little risque for young kids, btw, but a lot of the innuendo will probably fly over their heads, and they'll love the silly action.)
