FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH Firefighter/Paramedic Darrell Little This March marks Firefighter/Paramedic Little’s fifth year with the LAFD. Little is assigned to Fire Station 57 in South Los Angeles, mere blocks from his current residence and a few streets away from his childhood home.... Surprisingly, he is one of only a handful of active LAFD members who live and work in the neighborhood where they grew up. Little’s current assignment was not coincidental. He requested the opportunity to work here shortly after completing paramedic school three and a half years ago. The community served by Station 57 is one of the LAFD’s busiest. In 2021, Station 57 responded to more than 12,000 emergency calls. It is also an area plagued by 9-1-1 calls related to violence. Little and his station mates confront a daily reality that tests their stamina, skills, and fortitude. It takes a certain type of character to want to work in this area willingly. We see a significant number of incidents that are really disheartening, explained Little. I’ve been on calls where it's people I know lost to gun violence or an overdose. It’s not easy, not by a long shot. But my roots are here. Many of the people I care about live in these neighborhoods. Little was a junior in high school when he decided on his dream job. As a multi-sport athlete, he was interested in pursuing a career that allowed him to stay physically active while helping others. One afternoon, I dropped by Fire Station 94 to ask a few questions about becoming a firefighter. They encouraged me to join the Cadet program, and the rest is history, explained Little. Deputy Chief Crowley is slated to accept the reigns from Chief Ralph Terrazas, who intends to retire in March of this year after 39 years of life-saving ...service to the people of Los Angeles. Please join us in wishing Deputy Chief Crowley the best of luck as she takes this next step in her prestigious career. #LAFD #LAFDchief #firefighters #losangelesfiredepartment #lafdfoundation See more

FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH Firefighter III Brent Stephens Firefighter Stephens is a five-year veteran of the LAFD currently assigned to Fire Station 3 in Downtown LA. Station 3 handles many metropolitan incident types such as high-rise fires, apartment fires, transportation accidents, elevator rescues, and a seemingly endless stream of medical emergencies. ... As far back as he could recall, there was never any doubt. Brent Stephens knew he was destined to become a firefighter. As a young boy, he would often visit his grandfather, who was assigned to the fireboat which serviced the port of Los Angeles for nearly 80 years. The stories my grandfather told about life as a firefighter captivated me and lit the spark that drove me to pursue my dream, shared Stephens. He was a hero, my hero, and I wanted to be just like him. Stephens transferred to Station 3 nearly a year ago, during the height of the pandemic. When I first arrived [at Station 3], Downtown still had that eerie ghost town-vibe, explained Stephens. Little by little, it’s been fascinating to watch this community come back to life. As downtown traffic and activity inch closer to the pre-pandemic pace, Stephens and his colleagues have witnessed the LAFD’s incident rates soar. In fact, Stephens and the Station 3 crew have handled close to 300 more emergency calls than this same time last year. Stephens’ role is affectionately referred to as utility player since he rotates between the engine, ladder truck, and Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance assignments. His skillset, versatility, and infectious positive attitude make him a valued member of the Station 3 family. Firefighter III Brent Stephens was selected as Firefighter of the Month for his outstanding service and the compassionate approach he applies to his duties. FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH FF/PM Rhonie Topinio Rhonie is living his childhood dream as firefighter and paramedic with the LAFD. In second grade, members from a nearby fire station paid a visit to Rhonie’s school. He recalls being awed by their safety presentation, marveling at their turnout equipment, climbing on the fire truck, but most importantly, he was struck by the firefighters’ friendliness.... From that day forward, I knew I wanted to be a firefighter. Nothing was going to change my mind, expressed Rhonie. Rhonie is now in his third year with the @losangelesfiredepartment, and his second year assigned to Station 4 in the Arts District. Working at Station 4 is wild, shared Rhonie. It’s such a unique experience because of our great crew, the area we serve, and the surprising sense of community. Between the jails and Union Station, we see a ton of medical calls, and there’s never a dull moment. According to Captain Gayle Sonoda, FF/PM Topinio is exactly the type of member you want on your team. He’s a hard worker, shows initiative, actively seeks opportunities to learn and improve, and he always seems to have a great attitude - even when he’s exhausted, remarked Captain Sonoda. Thanks to Marathon Petroleum, Rhonie and the crew at Station 4 are receiving a $500 station sponsorship. They plan to apply the sponsorship towards technology upgrades in their apparatus bay. Candid and incredible shots from the LAFD Search and Rescue Task Force 9 deployed to Chico, CA, for the North Complex Fire. This specialized team of humans and canines had the sobering responsibility of searching remote areas for deceased victims. In the process of carrying out their assignment, task force members also extinguished hot spots and cleared dozens of access roads.... The chainsaws and other tools relied on for this special assignment are the same critically important resources needed to protect Los Angeles from the threat of wildfires. In fact, brush clearance tool kits are at the top of the LAFD Foundation’s immediate funding priorities.
