LAFD Central 13.05.2021

March 8, 2021 - On this 23rd anniversary of his passing, the Los Angeles Fire Department's In-Service Training Section is proud to present this documentary-sty...le tribute honoring and remembering the life of Engine 57 Captain I Joseph Dupee, who was killed in the line of duty. - - - - - We strongly encourage members of the fire service to watch the entire video. You'll find lessons learned highlighted at the 22:07 mark, and a summation with more public-oriented content at 29:28 - - - - - On March 8th, 1998 at 2 20 AM, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a major emergency commercial structure fire at 5972 South Western Avenue. Captain Dupee ultimately became lost and separated from his crew which contributed to his death. In this video, Captain Craig Poulson gives his account and remembrance of the events that day leading to the ultimate sacrifice of Captain Dupee. Furthermore, he discusses living through a MayDay, lessons learned, personal accountability, and examples of significant advancements within the LAFD operations. The intent of this story is to honor our fallen and reinforce the LAFD’s Culture of Safety. The only way to honor our fallen is to learn from the sacrifice that they made in the hopes of not repeating the cycle. This video provides a powerful message on the importance of conducting a proper risk assessment at emergency incidents. It reinforces the importance of having a plan in everything we do and is in alignment with the motto Train as if your life depends on it. because it does. - - - - - Additional Information about Captain Dupee and the incident: http://lafire.com/lastalarm/1998-0308_Dupee/JosephDupee.htm NIOSH Report: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/fire/reports/face9807.html G-R-A-B-L-I-V-E-S: https://www.lacitychiefs.net//chief_officer/GRAB-LIVES.pdf

Happy Birthday LAFD Station 1... 80 Years Ago Today - on March 6, 1941, #LAFD Station1, the now oldest Los Angeles Fire Department station, at 2230 Pasadena Ave...nue in #LincolnHeights, opened for service. Eight non-stop decades ago. That's 29,220 days of continuous around-the-clock emergency service, day-and-night, since before the U.S. entered World War II. Built in Streamline Moderne style, Station 1 is not the first fire station in the City of Los Angeles, but took the number as a direct successor facility, when the earlier Station 1, built nearby in 1888, was formally decommissioned. Here's a Google Street View of LAFD Station 1 in April 2019: https://goo.gl/maps/MRdUUvJzWUXo9xy88 ...and a 2018 YouTube video that shows the crews responding: https://youtu.be/6z9pugnRa5g The crews assigned to Station 1 past and present are to be commended for their spirited upkeep of the fabled facility, which was declared City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Monument #156 on July 7, 1976.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) has taken delivery of the first robotic firefighting device in the United States. The Thermite RS3 is a robotic vehi...cle that can perform multiple functions, especially at complex and extended commercial and industrial fire incidents where it can be used to keep firefighters out of harm’s way. The RS3 was purchased and donated to the Department by the LAFD Foundation. It will be assigned to a Downtown fire station as part of an Urban Search and Rescue component. See more

LAFD History: In Memoriam 90 years ago today, Captain Elwood H. Henry died from injuries sustained in a fall down an elevator shaft while trying to effect a res...cue (which turned out to be a false report). Rest in Peace, Captain Henry. Summary of the incident: At 4:44 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 1930, Engine 10 and Truck 11 were dispatched from their 1615 South Hill Street station to the multi-story Fiskin Building, a furniture wholesaler at 919 East Pico Boulevard. Captain Elwood Henry of Engine Company 10 was serving as acting district (battalion) chief and answered the rescue alarm. Firefighters found Daniel Gonzales, 5, one of the several youngsters who had been playing in the elevator shaft, clinging to an interior window ledge. The boy was critically injured when squeezed between the elevator cage and the shaft. Truck 11 raised a 50-foot Bangor ladder, brought the boy down and he was rushed to Central Receiving Hospital. Henry was assured that all other youngsters had fled the building and was preparing to leave when he was told that another boy was trapped in the shaft. Henry went back inside and, while looking up the shaft, slipped and fell head-first 15-feet to the concrete floor of the elevator pit. Henry, 42, died at 9:10 that evening of skull fractures. The report that a second youngster was in the shaft proved to be false.

Today we remember LAFD Captain Lane Kemper, who passed away from job-related cancer 14 years ago. Lane was a pillar in our department & in the community, whose legacy lives on. Each drill tower class still honors him during the forcible entry section of training.

85 years ago today, #LAFD Captain Lawrence W. Krumsiek died from burns sustained in a structure fire. From The Grape Vine, September 1935: At 10:16 o'clock on S...aturday, Sept. 7, Mr.. Gordon Gould, Superintendent of the Mission Painted Fabrics Company, discovered a fire in the plant located at 2481 E. 4th Street. Immediately he notified the fire department and Engine Companies 2, 5 and 24, with Truck Companies 17 and 24; also Salvage 24 answered the alarm. The building contained many volatile liquids used in waterproofing fabrics. Especially one dipping tank through which the fabrics were run to process them; this tank being an open one. Immediately upon arrival of the fire companies, Engine 2, who was the first on the scene proceeded to lay lines into the building. The front openings proved to be accessible, and Captain Krumsiek and Fireman Geo. Damron entered at a point in front of the water proofing tank. However, the fire had spread so rapidly that it was necessary to enter at other points of the structure and Engine 2 entered with another line in the opposite opening at the front of the building. Almost simultaneously Engine Companies No. 5 and 24 had lines entering the building at the side and rear entrances. The fire was by this time covering the entire structure. However it was quickly overcome and apparently no danger existed, the blaze having been extinguished. The pre-heated condition of the volatile liquids contained in the water-proofing tank caused a boil-over and re-igniting itself on the floor entrapped Captain Krumsiek and Fireman Damron who were immediately enveloped in flames. Very heroic efforts were made to extinguish the flames enveloping the two men and accomplishment was made to a certain degree, but not in time to avert the deaths of the two members involved. "Killed in line of duty" goes down in the record for Captain Lawrence W. Krumsiek and Fireman Geo. Damron. Very appropriate and fitting services which reflected nothing but credit upon the type of men who were being honored and the services that they had rendered, not even hesitating at the cost of their own lives in the protection of life and property." #LODD #RIP
