The Rain Has Arrived: The City of Lafayette Has Sandbag Stations Ready For Residents The long-awaited winter rainy season has begun in earnest. This series of s...torms is slated to last into next week. Are you prepared? If you are a Lafayette resident with drainage issues and need to divert water around your home, the City of Lafayette has two fill-them-yourself sandbag stations. The stations are located on Camino Diablo at Loveland Drive (immediately west of the Lafayette Corporation Yard), and Mt. Diablo Boulevard at Village Center (across the street from the Veterans Memorial Center). For more information, visit https://www.lovelafayette.org//public-wor/sandbag-stations. Also, you can help minimize drainage issues, and even flooding, by raking up leaves and debris in yards and along your property. Remember, please do not blow or rake leaves into the street or into gutters, ditches, tributaries, or creeks. This could actually contribute to flooding. Lafayette Public Works crews have been busy prior to the onset of this week's storms cleaning out storm drains and ditches. They will monitor streets and drains throughout the winter. However, if you see an area in Lafayette that needs the attention of the City’s Public Works Department, perhaps due to flooding, a new pothole, or a downed tree limb, please call Lafayette’s Corporation Yard at (925) 934-3908 and a crew will be sent out to tackle the situation. Stay safe and dry this winter.

Lafayette United Methodist Church (LUMC) is a faith community that strives to lead through love of God and love of neighbor. Joyful Beginnings Preschool is our faith-based early education center and the only Lafayette preschool to have a four star rating in the First 5 Contra Costa Quality Matters program. The Lafayette United Methodist Church has been an integral part of the community serving the residents of Lafayette since it was established in 1855 (165 years!) when pioneer citizens gathered in Elam Brown’s (Lafayette founder) home for Sunday Services. The first church was erected in the 1850’s in the 2nd Street Golden Gateway area with Brown, Nathaniel Jones, Benjamin Shreve (Lafayette’s first teacher) and Milo Hough (hotel owner and region postmaster) active in its establishment. In 1927, Lafayette’s third schoolhouse was purchased and is now the nucleus of the church’s sanctuary. The original school and belfry were built in 1893 and are easily identifiable, especially by the 100’s of 3rd grade students who have visited and rung the church bell during their Lafayette history tour.
