Thanks to everyone who came out to protest the repeal of Emergency Rule 1 today! Special thanks to Legal Assistance to the Elderly, Housing Rights Committee of... SF, and SF Tenants Union for joining us today! The economic crisis facing renters is dire. It is not speculative to say that when Rule 1 is lifted, millions of Californians, including children, will lose their homes. If the Judicial Council @CaliforniaCourts #CAJudicialCouncil acts to rescind its Emergency Rule without a proper legislative fix it will look like California was hit by the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s with thousands of people becoming unhoused and living on the streets. #fightfightfight #HousingIsARight #SaveRule1 #PeopleOverProperty #housingjusticeisracialjustice

Dear Friends, Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a day of global giving and unity launched as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. As we face this crisis, Legal Assistance to the Elderly is more vulnerable than ever, and we need your support! Despite the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, we know that seniors are the most impacted by this disease and the shelter-in-place orders. At Legal Assistance to the Elderly 60% of our clients live alone and right ...now they are isolated and afraid. Since the early days of this pandemic, we have been helping seniors access healthcare, protecting them from abuse, fighting for their homes, and much more. Here is just one case we took on during this pandemic. "Michael" called our office because he was being discharged from a Skilled Nursing Facility without a care plan or any resources for living independently. He wasn’t able to go home safely. The facility was ordering this discharge despite the City’s Shelter-in-Place order and Michael’s high risk for contracting COVID-19. He was in the facility recovering from brain surgery to repair an injury caused by repeated falls. LAE represented him at his hearing challenging this discharge and won. This gave our client the time to heal and forced the facility to let him stay until he was ready to go home. With these additional weeks, Michael was able to recover and return happily and healthfully to his home in a North Beach SRO. Our funding is being cut. Today, as Legal Assistance to the Elderly navigates the financial fallout from this pandemic, we need your help to protect our seniors who are more vulnerable than ever before. So please be well, stay safe and give what you can to Legal Assistance to the Elderly. All my best, Laura Slade Chiera Executive Director DONATE -Protect seniors' rights during the COVID-19 crisis.
