Happy Summer OLR Community, Mr. Green here! I am so excited to officially be in office. Please know the school is hard at work preparing plans for the school to safely reopen in August. I wanted to make you aware of our Summer Office Hours. Families be sure to continue to check your emails for updates in regards to our plans for the 2020-2021 School Year. A MESSAGE FROM MR. DONNIE GREEN: To the Our Lady of Refuge Community, I would like to start by saying thank you to Father Gerard, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and the entire Our Lady of Refuge School Community for entrusting me with the wonderful gift that is Our Lady of Refuge School. I am truly blessed and excited to be working with you all as interim principal.... I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you. My name is Mr. Donnie Green, and I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio. As the youngest of four children, one of the greatest gifts my parents gave us is our foundation in Catholic Education. I am a product of 19 years of Catholic Education. My own Catholic education continues to shape my career path. I began my teaching practice as a member of the Alliance of Catholic Education through the University of Notre Dame. As a member of A.C.E. I taught 4th grade at St. Justin Martyr in Anaheim, California. Upon graduating from Notre Dame with my Masters in Education, I made the move to Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. as the Assistant Director of Campus Ministry. After two years, I felt God’s call to return to the classroom. I returned to Southern California in 2017 as the Religion teacher and Director of Faith Formation at Our Lady of Fatima School in Artesia, California. As I continued to discern ways to serve within Catholic Education, I joined the Onward Leaders program. I served as a resident principal at St. Lucy School and interim principal at St. Stephen Martyr. I spent this last year as principal of St. Sebastian School in West Los Angeles. As my time at St. Sebastian school comes to an end, I am excited to return to Long Beach and be able to walk with you as the interim principal of Our Lady of Refuge. Pope John Paul II said, Catholic education is above all a question of communicating Christ, of helping to form Christ in the lives of others. As a new member of the Faith Community of Our Lady of Refuge, I share the commitment to Jesus Christ and the call by Him to minister in love to others. I am excited to deepen this as we work together to provide the best opportunity for each student. In these unprecedented times, please be assured of my prayers and collaborative spirit. As we look forward to summer and the new school year, I look forward to working with you all to provide the best learning experience for our students. I am excited to get to meet everyone from this wonderful community. Through my early interactions with the school and parish communities I am already energized by the potential that the new school year will bring. A MESSAGE FROM FR. GERARD: Greetings to OLR School and Parish Community, I do hope all of you are coping OK in these most unusual moments in our lives as we move forward into a new experience of life. Thanks to all at the school in this new experience of learning online. To the students, parents, faculty, and staff, you are all doing a tremendous job. God bless you all.... I miss all of you, especially the energy this time of the year as we plan graduation and end-of-year school activities. Our faith tells us to trust in God as we move forward with hope. As you all know change is not easy, but we now live in constant change and often there is no other option but trust. Recently I informed you that I would seek a new principal for the coming year and today I want to introduce you to Mr. Donnie Green who is presently Principal at St. Sebastian in West Los Angeles. In these unprecedented times I sought the advice of the Department of Catholic Schools in my endeavor to seek a principal and I was advised that an interim principal for 2020-2021 would be a good option. Mr. Green is a member of Onward Leaders Cohort, a specialized residency and leadership program for which only a select few are chosen. His experience is extensive and exemplary. He will move our school forward with professionalism, enthusiasm, and leadership. Naming an interim this year also gives us the opportunity to conduct an extensive search next January, if necessary. The appointment of an interim principal simply means that Mr. Green will fulfill the role fully for the upcoming year. This allows us to recover and allows all to worry less. The decision is best for the emotional health of the school students, parents, and staff. Mr. Green is very qualified and looking forward to serving in OLR. The first time I met him was the Together in Mission pledge weekend here at the parish. He spoke passionately at all the Masses about his love for teaching and Catholic schools. Many parishioners were very impressed and inspired by his presence that weekend. I recall talking to him that Sunday and he shared with me the warmth he experienced from the OLR community. I ask you all to join me in welcoming Mr. Green to his new role starting this July. Let us put our trust in the Lord and may Our Lady of Refuge protect us. Peace, Fr. Gerard O’Brien
